This was an unprecedented dance for me. It was the first time I would be highlighted amidst 14 other talented individuals. Dancers that could manifest our choreographer's vision in a more proficient manner were sidelined. I felt petrified. It was indisputable that there was no room for mistake. Our choreographer would be watching and she had high expectations from me. Family, friends, and teachers were exhilarated to see the Herricks Dance Crew. The group before us finished and the audience erupted in cheers. After they exited, darkness consumed the auditorium. The stage manager told us to take our positions. I made my way following the tape that was illuminated for the dancers. Except for the murmurs in the crowd, there was total silence. The first drops of sweat trickled down. My heart was beating at a prolific rate. So, I closed my eyes and took three deep breaths.
During those breaths, before the lights came on, I reflected on my aspiration for this club. I realized why I allocated hours upon hours for the past year for this performance.
These few moments allowed me the freedom to express myself. Like a painter, the stage became my canvas and I had the duty of filling it with the art of dance. This show gave average dancers such as myself to create something not so average. The time we put practice was worth the final result. The accomplishment of creating something your own is why I was part of this. With all of this in mind, I waited.
