Dancing at lughnasa is filled with small bursts of action that are very significant to the lives of each character. Act 1 action begins with gossip among the sisters until they acknowledge the kite that Michael is working on. This scene is one of the few times Michael is seen talking. They go on to talk about the arrival of their Uncle Jack from Uganda after 25 years of being gone. Throught act 1, when the radio actually works, the songs begin to break into song and dance that reveals much about each of their personalities. One afternoon, they spot Gerry Evans, Michael’s father approaching the house and he is not easily welcomed. The opening scene is a conversation featuring the elusive Michael with Maggie about the bike that his father promised to bring him in the previous act. The focus then moves to Jack who describes his rituals that he used to perform when he was still living in Uganda. After ack explains in-depthly what he used to do when he was practicing religion in Uganda, the sisters start to talk about how he would probably never say mass again. The focus is once again shifted to Chris and Gerry’s conversation. Gerry is explaining how he has enlisted in the military and is set for duty in Spain while offering to fix the radio.
