In the scientific short story “Flowers for Algernon”, by Daniel Keyes, Charlie Gordon should not have had the operation to make him intelligent. Charlie was better before the operation. For …show more content…
example, Charlie’s job at the bakery, everyone thought he was funny. They admired Charlie even though he wasn’t as productive as the other employees. Also, the text states, “I’m going back to work because I miss my job and all my friends and all the fun we have there.”This shows that Charlie has fun at his job because all of his friends are there. He was better before the operation. for instance,, the text states, “Before, they laughed at me and despised me for my ignorance and dullness; now, they hate me for my knowledge and understanding.” This shows that with the operation, he lost his job and his friends. Another example from the text is, “Now I’m more alone than ever…” It will be hard for Charlie to adapt to not having friends. This proves that his old friends are scared of him, and they don’t want him to be smarter than them. Again, Charlie was better before the operation. On page 39, it states, “Everybody around here’s been saying, ‘Charlie, it’s not right.’” That summarizes that he is how this will completely diverse that he was before the operation. In conclusion, Charlie Gordon should not have had the operation to promote his intelligence. It is dangerous to tamper with human nature because in the article “The Ethics of Children to Order,” by Tia Ghose, it expresses, “There are many unethical disadvantages. to ‘Designer Babies’ and the issue is an extremely slippery slope and should not be pursued.”This shows that others also agree that changing the DNA of babies is wrong and uncalled for. Also, in the article, “Ethics of Children to Order,” by Tia Ghose, it states, “ A negative aspect of gene modification is that it is unknown how this will affect the gene pool.” Also genetic engineering is immoral because it’s just like asking a pregnant woman, “Do you want to take care of your son of your son or a machine’s son?” Another example from the text is, “If the process is not done carefully, the embryo could be accidentally terminated (killed).” This proves that if something goes wrong, the embryo could die, and the bbaby wouldn’t be born. In paragraph 3, it states, “The technology used is only in the experimental stages at this point, and it is not 100% safe or sound yet; so mistakes will be made. This illustrates that it is more likely to fail that be successful. In conclusion, it is not okay to change humans by messing with their DNA.
While some researchers explain, “Genetically modifying babies creates the perfect baby and make it just how you want.” On the other hand, it is also extremely high in value, a rare chance of working, and he/she is considered a nonhuman. There are more negatives than positives in genetic engineering. For instance, according to the article “
Scientists are beginning to change the DNA of babies to make him/her with wanted characteristics.
Artificially modifying humans is unnecessary, immoral, and should not take place. Human engineering and “Flowers for Algernon” relate to what’s going on today; scientists are performing operations to modify humans which is similar to the operation that Charlie went through to make him smarter. | Human engineering can change the future in a negative way. It fails more than successes, so it would lower the population because of the millions of failures. Also, it can send the moms into spiralling despair because of their kids who have unsuccessfully went through an operation. This topic is important for both its positives and
negatives.
