Deviance
Deviance is a sociological perspective that describes a person as deviant or abnormal when he or she copes in such a way that is extremely different to how the majority of society copes (Hutchison, 2015). Most people may not be able to comprehend the deviant person’s coping behaviors (Hutchison, 2015). For instance, Dan tends to get sad and frustrated when his loved-ones disagree with him or do not obey his commands. Most individuals may be a little aggravated if someone disagreed with them, but they would not be continuously focused on the incident or be distracted from their school work. Dan also isolated himself from many of his peers at school and would stop hanging out with the peers when they upset him. These behaviors can be seen as abnormal because most college students try to interact with their peers and will try different ways to resolve a conflict with a peer. By looking at Dan’s situation with the Deviance model, I can better understand why he is facing interpersonal conflicts and stress.
Social Functioning The social functioning perspective is derived from the social work profession (Hutchison, 2015). It involves observing a person in their environment overtime and deciphering what aspects are causing them to function positively or negatively in society (Hutchison, 2015). This perspective can be useful with analyzing Dan’s situation because it observes multiple areas of his environment that can be impacting him.
