The article I chose to analyze is named Dare to Ask Children as Relatives! A Qualitative Study About Female Teenagers Experiences of Losing a Parent to Cancer. To conduct this study, there were three writers. The first writer is a registered nurse named Maria Tillquist from Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. The second writer is also a registered nurse by the name of Frida Backrud from Haugesund Hospital in Norway. The third writer, Kristina Rosengren, has her PhD. and is also a registered nurse from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. According to researchers Tillquist, M., Bäckrud, F., & Rosengren, K. (2016). “Cancer is a disease that affects not only the patient but the families as well, specifically children “(para. 2). It is important for nurses to understand that life threatening illnesses have a great impact on children. Losing a parent during adolescence can result in the child developing emotional, behavioral, physical and cognitive problems. Many teenagers use social media to express what they can’t express verbally. Whether it be because they are embarrassed to express what they are feeling or simply don’t like to talk about their personal life; social media would be the form of communication with the teenager. Also, being honest with the children about the palliative care process in which the parent is in is important. Encouraging health care professionals to inform the children in a proper way would be something I would do. The patient’s children should be informed of what is going on with the parent who is ill to ensure that the family will be able to cope with those feelings of fear, anger, sadness and
