-Divided into 3 states
-There are between 40-80 ethnic groups in Darfur (most villages are multi ethnic)

When did this begin?
This began in the Spring of 2003 after two rebel movements, The Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality movement took up arms against the Sudanese government, complaining about the failure to protect sedentary people from attacks by nomads The Sudanese government responded by releasing Arab militias known as the “Janjaweed” or “Devils on Horseback”
What is happening?
-The attacks began with Sudanese Air Force bombings
-The Janjaweed began to bomb and burn down villages.
-Destroyed over 400 villages
-millions of civilians were killed or forced to leave their homes.
-About 300,000 people lost their lives from 2003 to 2005
-Enslaving and raping Children and women
-burning food stocks
-stealing live stock
-more than 100 people die each day
-5,000 people die each month
- Dead bodies are tossed in wells to contaminate water supplies
-2.7 million Darfuris remain in internally displaced persons camps
-over 4.7 million rely on humanitarian aid
