The setting of the battle against Grendel’s mother and the battle against the Dragon, in the movie detracts from my understanding of the poem. When Beowulf went to face Grendel’s mother in the poem, the lair was described as a place where even a “deer hunted through the woods by a pack of hounds, a stag with great horns…prefers to die on those shores.”(Beowulf 433) instead of going into the lake. Alternatively the movie depicts the lair as a difficult place to reach, but not impossible, it appears to be less scary than that of the poem. Throughout the battle against the Dragon, ‘Beowulf’s son,’ the setting is Grendel’s mother’s lair. In the poem, the battle took place in a different place, on the contrary in the movie, it was fought in the same place where Beowulf went to talk to Grendel’s mother. The characters, the sequence of events, along with the certitude behind Grendel’s progenitor and the background of the movie lessen my original comprehension of the…
Through juxtaposition of the setting, the narrator contrasts the glory with the great risk involved, creating suspense. Denmark’s “sunlit cliffs” with the “sheer crags” accentuate the possible outcomes to the fight between Beowulf and Grendel (unknown, 121). Though the anguish among the Danes is clear, the optimism symbolized by the “sunlit cliffs” instills the hope for a change in fortune. The sun represents a new beginning, since it rises at the beginning of every new day. This word reveals that Beowulf has a chance of defeating Grendel and saving Heorot from its dismal fate.…
Light and Dark. Also known as good and bad, but how do they relate to the Epic Hero? Beowulf is a poem about this hero that travels from place to place to fight off evil monsters. An Epic Hero must undertake a quest to achieve something o tremendous value to himself and his society. Therefore, an Epic Hero must go through challenging trials that will bring him either into the light or into dark.…
The sound of battle echoed from the halls of Heorot to the plains of geatland, Beowulf in all his glory was a conquering hero that was approaching his twilight years as king. As such he faced a new challenge, in his youth he fought and defeated Grendel and his mother to defend the people of Denmark and Heorot, he was now called to defend his land from this dragon. This beast which had awakened from its dormant rest and was now on a rampage to defend its treasure. These monsters shared many similarities that tie together with a unifying message. In Beowulf, the values and views of Anglo-Saxon society are reflected in the idea that both Grendel and the Dragon serve as warning that no man is immortal or god like and that we will all face judgement.…
Beowulf, an epic poem written in England in the 8th century, introduces us to a character known as Grendel, a vicious beast who terrorizes a village in Denmark. In 1971, an American author named John Gardner reintroduces the character, this time re-telling the story from the monster’s point of view. In both stories Grendel is portrayed in many similar, but also many different ways.…
In defining the isolation and hatred that Grendel has experienced throughout his whole life, Gardner creates an anti-hero that has more defining characteristics than that in the “Beowulf” text. In all, without “Grendel” the reader would not be able to experience a different perspective that differs from its medieval origins but adds a new layer to complex…
Where she lives it’s swampy, murky, and hideous it’s like almost as a mean rude Disgusting which can live there, in her home which is swampy she has horrifying weapons and Has her son’s arm, she is very grievous about the loss of her son and will destroy who ever has Done such a terrible thing to her son. Next, the dragon who is very ancient of old times is Known to be a serpent which is awaken by a Geat (at this time of matter Beowulf is King.) who Has stolen treasure (a cup) from him hidden in a mound, so with his fiery vicious mouth he Blows out hot steaming fire burning all the Geats lands and houses. I think the poets has given Grendel and his mother human qualities so that we can understand or imagine how each Monster is feeling to show how passionate they are and aggressive. Each of the monsters home Would typically describe who they are and what they are and how they act.…
Beowulf uses long sentences, short clauses separated by commas, and gloomy diction while describing how Grendel sees the world. He describes Grendel’s view as a “dark nightmare-history” and states that Grendel sees “time-as [a]-coffin.” His somber description of Grendel’s history and view of time projects a critical and depressing light onto Grendel’s ideas. Additionally, the short clauses that these statements are expressed through do not allow for elaboration on Grendel’s view, discouraging the listener from agreeing with Grendel. These negative and terse descriptors contrast with the lengthy prose Beowulf uses to describe his own views. Beowulf believes that “the world will burn green [and] sperm [will] build again,” and sees “time [as] the mind, the hand that makes.” Beowulf, in describing his own views, employs the positive diction of “green,” “build,” “mind,” and “makes.” All of these words have to do with giving new life and resurgence. Beowulf pairs vivacious language with a longer sentence structure that allows for more elaboration to compel any listener to agree with…

In the first line of this passage, Beowulf states, “As you see it it is, while the seeing lasts, dark nightmare history, time as coffin; but where the water was rigid there will be fish, and men will survive on their flesh till spring.” In this line he is saying that what Grendel chooses to see in the world he will, such as history being comparable to a nightmare, and time being a coffin, or in another word imprisoning. Beowulf goes on in this first line to say that despite what Grendel chooses to see life will go on for other people around him in their own way, indicated by him saying, “where the water is rigid there will be fish, and men will survive on their flesh until spring.” In saying this he gives direct reference to Nihilism and Existentialism, which are two crucial philosophies present in this novel.…
The novel Grendel is one of the most profound and controversial works of contemporary American author John Gardner. Being a very versatile creative personality- novelist, specialist in study of literature, and critic; Gardner’s work is distinguished by its versatility. As a professional researcher of medieval English literature, Gardner had a particular interest in Anglo-Saxon poetry of the eighth century, especially the epic Beowulf. The novel Grendel was created in the literary material of this epic. The author uses a part of the story presenting the events from the point of view of the monster Grendel. The latter stands for a symbol of individualism which plays the dominant role in the worldview of modern…
Many novels are an allegory, a novel in which it has a literal meaning and a metaphorical meaning. Sometimes the literal meaning is important but many readers will lose the meaning of the literal part of the novel. This is especially true in the novel, Grendel. The zodiological and philosophical content in the novel, Grendel, have pushed out the whole other perspective of the novel, which is in Beowulf’s point of view.…
After getting separated from Brecca by a storm, Beowulf battled sea monsters at night; by morning, "[the monsters] decided to sleep on the shore... their blood spilled out/ on the sand" (Raffel 2: 565-568). Not only did Beowulf voluntarily swim out into the ocean and fight monsters, but he did so for multiple nights, proving the extraordinary courage he demonstrated was not a fluke. Later, Beowulf once again demonstrated his extreme bravery when he entered the lake to fight Grendel's mother. This lake was described as radiating an evil so great that even "a stag with great horns... [preferred] to die/ on those shores, [refused] to save its life/ in that water" (Raffel 56: 435-438). No other man or beast was willing to enter this lake, to confront the evils within, except Beowulf. Without even the slightest hesitation Beowulf entered the lake, a true testament to his incomprehensible…
