Looking back at the documentary, Darwin's Nightmare, it reveals the corrupted political and economic situation of Tanzania and the harsh living conditions of the residents of Tanzania. Despite its outlook, Tanzania posted that it has a positive economic growth. Jeffrey Sachs mentions that there are four pathways that leads to economic prosperity: saving, trade, technology, and resource boom.
Starting off with Jeffrey Sachs’ view of saving, in his novel, End of Poverty, he wrote that savings led “to capital accumulation …, which in turn has raised household productivity" (Sachs 52). In other words, he trying to convey that saving is the ability to have a surplus and be able to use that surplus to further improve their own living condition. However, looking at the situation of Tanzania, there is the lack of savings. In the documentary, there are multiple scenes where children gathering around, stealing food and eating it for themselves. Families in Tanzania aren’t able to save enough money to survive due to primarily of two reasons. The first reason is the scarce amount of jobs in Tanzania. Tanzania's government sole purpose is to sell the country to other nations. It overlooks or completely avoids problems relating to the poverty. With frequent wars that occurring around Tanzania, there is a wide spread of drugs to the country and arms trading to Europe. However, the government doesn’t intervene. It attempts to make a quick profit overseas, while undermining the long term effects to Tanzania. They avoided the issue of overfishing, where the oxygen levels of the ocean were dramatically dropping. Also, they borrowed money from other country, causing Tanzania to be in debt to many other nations. This ignorance of the situation in Tanzania is driving its economy
