Chapter 1 Introduction
“DEAN” Empowering the administrator/s decisions
Data is emerging as a new science, a result of the unprecedented increase in the amount of digital information produced today and the realization of innovative ways to extract value from it. Technological advances in Mapua Institute of Technology (MAPUA) have led to an abundance of digital information sources that constantly generate data in managing the school, coherently the School of Information Technology(SOIT). Though its effectiveness explores several key aspects of the school – student records [enrolment statistics, number of transferees (those that come in and out of SOIT), shifters, number of graduates], faculty records [performance evaluation data, faculty profile, faculty load and grade statistics for each faculty member], and the curriculum that would include the different curricula of the three-programs, course equivalency data, and its grade statistics for each course. In drawing together the key aspects mentioned this will empower the decision making of the Dean of the School of Information Technology, adherently in 3 main factors: (1) Manage enrolment efficiently, (2)Retain Students, (3)strengthen the ties with its alumni, faculty, students like wise keeping the campus safe and maintaining its standards. Henceforth, data will play a big role in order to achieve this goal, so a way to properly understand and manage them is needed. Data analytics is the science of examining raw data with the purpose of drawing conclusions about that information. Data analytics is used in many industries to allow companies and organization to make better business decisions and in the sciences to verify or disprove existing models or theories. Data analytics is distinguished from data mining by the scope, purpose and focus of the analysis.
