Throughout its history, Jefferson City became prominent for the Missouri State Penitentiary, a prison that was opened from 1836 to 2004, earning the gruesome epithet of the “bloodiest 47 acres in America.” Today, Jeff City has a population of 43,079 and a wider metropolitan area of 149,807, which makes it the 15th largest…

I am David Shane Dobyns, twenty-two years of age; I was born in Puyallup, Washington August 17th 1994 at Good Samaritan hospital. My family consists of my mother, father, and brother. Growing up was as idyllic as one would suspect. In my pre-pubescent years we moved several times bouncing from Oregon to Washington in search of “gods’ plan” for us, finally starting a church of our own in Lubbock, Texas. The church siphoned our time and money to the brink of poverty. Through the eyes of a jaded 5-year-old, everything was but a perfect utopia, neither a problem nor a care in the world. Mother was a stay at home at the wife, dictated by the church, whilst father worked odd jobs donating what blood and platelets he could muster that week to pay…
Daniel Tammett is an extraordinary person in more ways than one. He has savant syndrome, which in itself is extremely rare. Savants have skills such as superior memory, lightening calculation, calendar calculating, musical ability, artistic ability, and/or language ability. Daniel has many of these. Daniel also has a “visual, emotional experience of numbers” (2) called synesthesia, which is also “a rare neurological mixing of the senses” (2), and on top of those two disorders, he also has Asperger’s syndrome. Having one of those can be so debilitating that it can be extremely hard to function in the world, but having three?? If someone were to say they had those disorders, it would be assumed that he/she would be living in a hospital because they would need help with daily living. Daniel is strong though, and he never let any of his disorders keep him down. That is a unique thing about him.…
