more of a wise man who was interested in the arts, and not being the lunatic king he was said to be. Thus showing how 1776 transformed my perspective of Washington and King George III.
I think McCullough chose to begin 1776 with King George III of England because he had the power to avoid the revolution. Obtaining details about King George III reveals who is as a person and what he is capable of. Perhaps choosing him to commence the book also creates a broad idea of the chain of events that is going to occur. When David McCullough describes the King of England, instead of portraying him as an insane ruler, he shows of his wisdom and passions. Another reason why McCullough chose to begin with the King of England is to present the tone for events that are to occur. Using the King of England sets a big picture of the chain of events that are about to emerge. With him in power he has the people on his side for the fighting and believe it won’t take be time consuming. However throughout the book, his subjects’ support soon to diminish as the war passes through time. Thus showing how the use of King George III to begin 1776 by David McCullough to set the tone for upcoming events.
George Washington had many qualities that made him a successful leader such as, being determined, endurance, bold, and confident.
The Congress is reliant of Washington is because he is determined to follow through orders. Washington possessing this determination assisted him turning a lost cost into success by him wanting to achieve the orders and his goals. Some qualities that were vital of him being a successful leader are his endurance and him being bold. However, those two qualities weren’t present during the battle of New York, they were key to the victory of battle Trenton. These qualities proved to be essential to lead his men because his endurance allowed him to act nimbly, and was also intelligent to make the crucial moves during the battle of Trenton. Also, his endurance permitted him to handle tough situations, such as freezing temperatures. Washington’s boldness allowed him to not fear for the worse, and gave his fellow troops the courage and belief needed. Lastly, George Washington’s confidence, which grew throughout the book, helped him achieve the belief he needs in his troops. Having the faith from his army meant that they would go through with the orders. Thus showing how these qualities: endurance, confidence, bold, and his determination helped him succeed in being a
leader.
I think the war could not have been won if George Washington wasn’t the commander to lead the colonies in the revolution. George Washington started off as an inexperienced commander. However, without him and the qualities he has to offer to the military, it would be a loss to the army. I think this because the battle of Trenton could have various outcomes if Charles Lee wasn’t captured and able to replace him. Even though Washington had made critical errors in battle of New York, he instantly learned from his errors. Which encouraged him to be more wary and precise on future battles such as Trenton. Even when people such as Joseph Reid losing faith in Washington, he was still determined to push on and fight. Thus justifying why I think if George Washington was not the commander, the revolution would not have been won.
The Declaration of Independence had a major impact on the moral of the army. The news of the signing of the declaration in July served as a major morale boost to the army. This morale lift was expressed to be very significant for George Washington later on in the battle of Trenton. The lifted spirits inside the army help push on and regained faith back into Washington. The signing of the Declaration of Independence also signify the unity among the troops between the colonies. Thus showing the effects the declaration had morally on the soldiers in the army.
I was surprised by many things from the book 1776. For example, it stunned me learning how foolish George Washington was throughout the early battles. After learning the mistakes he had made and how vital they were, it altered my opinion about him slightly. Another one that took me by surprise was King George III being more wise than what I was taught. After gaining this information, it changes my thought of him as ruler by him not being so insane and a good leader for England. Lastly, discovering the amount of chances the British had the opportunity to fire the killing blow to the colonies amazed me. The British underestimated the colonies during the war, which lead to them losing grasp of victory. It would have been majorly different if the British threw the final blow at Washington at the battle of New York. Thus showing some facts that took me by shock while reading 1776 by David McCullough.
