Dawn's Theology
Some topics to discuss:
How would you describe or position your peer's theology? Dawn's theology is “God is love and mystery and we don’t have all the answers, so we keep asking and keep listening.” Her understanding of ministry is love through service to others, and as a Christian she sees that as following Jesus in the same way kids play “Follow the Leader,”. She believes she is do as well. Feed the hungry, heal the sick, raise the dead. She wants to serve as a, chaplain and ordained deacon. As a deacon, her work will be mostly with the marginalized, underserved, poor, forgotten, and specifically as a chaplain/deacon with those who are ill and dying.

What sources and conversation partners does s/he draw on?
Dawn draws upon the Episcopal Church, Alcoholics Anonymous, and chaplaincy. The Book of Common Prayer (BCP) says the mission of the Church is “to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ” (855). The BCP notes that deacons are to “represent Christ and his Church, particularly as a servant of those in need” which is why she feels called to that particular ministry (856).

What is clear about Dawn is the following: She was impacted by her divorce and alcohol and she wants to use those things for good. As a deacon in the Church, she studies the Holy Scriptures, to seek nourishment from them, and to model her life upon them. She believes and want to walk out Christ and his redemptive love known, by word and example, to those among whom you live, and work, and worship. She believes: You are to
interpret to the Church the needs, concerns, and hopes of the
world. You are to assist the bishop and priests in public worship and in the ministration of God's Word and Sacraments, and you are to carry out other duties assigned to
you from time to

Although it is still open for debate, there are suggestions that chaplaincy, as a function in the military, can be traced in the Old Testament. Consider the battle of the Israelites and the Amalekites. The children of Israel experienced victory as long Moses held his hands up in Prayer to God. Another example that is discussed in the book deals with the Priests who carried the Ark of the Covenant in some of the battles the Israelites were engaged in. Gideon is also looked at as playing the roles of a prophet, priest, and general.…

The laity's primary vocation is the call to holiness. This universal vocation is to be lived out in union with the whole Church. Therefore, as the laity are becoming more prepared today than ever before for the work of evangelization, it is important that there be great collaboration and unity between the ordained ministers, the consecrated ministers and the lay ministers of the Church. Prayer, maturity, and spiritual zeal for the salvation of souls are required to put aside any differences of opinions or personalities that can surface when various people are seeking the will of God through their…

This mission reminds us that for the Kingdom of God to continue to break in, individual lives need to be changed, while being motivated and equipped for transformation. Our Book of Discipline offers this cue: “God has used our church to save persons, heal relationships, transform social structures, and spread scriptural holiness, thereby changing the world.” When we change lives and introduce people to the all-loving nature of God, we indeed transform the world. When making disciples, the Church welcomes people into community, educates them on God’s call for Christians, and equips them toward using their spiritual gifts to serve as change agents playing a role in bringing about the Kingdom of…

Lori, I truly enjoyed your interview response on Reverend Jennifer Beagle. I can agree with her statement on developing a ministry, “It’s a battle worth fighting, suit-up, buckle-up, and don’t doubt that God is in everything. Find God in every circumstance and view people as creations”. (Beagle, 2015) Just as the varying parts of the human body need each other to best accomplish its work, so the Body of Christ needs to function interdependently, like a team. (Rom. 12:4-8; 1 Cor. 12:12-27) God so designed the Church that it "grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work". (Eph. 4:16) Christian leaders are servants. Jesus specifically addresses servant leadership…

Our role play was timed so that it took place a few sessions in. A spiritual assessment would have been done early on in the counseling relationship. From this point forward though I think the client’s spirituality will play a huge role in her counseling sessions. She questions why God would allow her friend to die. She always described how spiritual she was and how much she depended on her faith. She described how since her friend’s’ death she was faltering on some of her spiritual rituals. Working with her and getting her back on track with her spiritual rituals could go a long way in helping her…
