Document Based Question
The United States underwent quite a few drastic constitutional and social developments during the period of 1860 to 1877 that led to civil unrest. These developments consisted of the secession of the South, the institution of new social orders in the South towards blacks, and the implementation of new amendments focused on civil rights. These changes ultimately led to one of the greatest revolutions in history and spurred movements that have affected the future of the
United States.
One of the first states to secede from the Union was South Carolina. Frustrated by the federal government's use of power over the states, this state and many to follow, seceded according to Document A. By doing so, the Southern states opened up a massive door to revolution between the North and South on constitutional and social issues that affected the lives of Americans for years to come. Both in war and in civil rights movements.
After the civil war ended, the focus of the Union was on the reconstruction of the South.
But the Southern white supremacists wholeheartedly wanted to impose new rules that limited blacks rights just as they did before.The Black Codes in 1865 and later on the Jim Crow Laws in the 1890’s resulted from the Southern whites persistence. The Freedmen's Bureau promised freed slaves a homestead and the means to enjoy a true American life. But, shown by the frustration of the men represented in the petition of Document E, these promises were never enforced and the men who once resisted the “just” government are now being forgiven.
Despite the implementation of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments, Blacks in the South were still continually attacked. The federal government persisted to guarantee their rights by passing numerous Acts, in particular the Civil Rights Act 1875, that led to political revolutions that affected the South socially.
