The second world war broke in Europe in 1939 with majority of Americans wanting to avoid America from getting involved in a third war. They were still fresh from the casualties and experiences from the World War I and still recovering from the Great Depression. America eventually joined the war after the attack on the Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. There is a big conspiracy behind the attacks on the Pearl Harbor, some historians say Americans were expecting such an attack from the Japanese others argue that it was Roosevelt’s plan to retain his presidency and the government needed a reason to enter the war, who believed that “war is good for the economy”.
The Story behind the Attacks
Americans were out the war for the first two and a half years, still recovering from the consequences of the Great Depression. The market crash of October 1929, led America in the longest lasting economic depression which lasted from 1929 to 1939. Steve Buyer, an American Politician quotes, “From a generation that came of age during the Great Depression, millions of our country’s best and bravest took up arms in a worldwide struggle against tyranny”.
Roosevelt announced, “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people”. Many economists and historians did not understand what he meant the by New deal at first, but until he introduced the New Deal on 1933, hoping that America would rise from the Great Depression. Franklin D. Roosevelt believed that the nation’s highest priority was to attack the domestic causes and consequences of the Great Depression. Roosevelt was concerned with Germany and Japan breaking the Versailles settlement threatening the world peace.
