The United States first took Iwo Jima, an island seven hundred mile from Japan, and then took Okinawa, an island three hundred fifty miles closer to Japan. The Japanese did not give these islands up easily though; the US lost a combined total of thirty-seven thousand men and hospitable many more wounded. Japan was now blockaded and bombed daily but refused to surrender to the Americans and offered no form of compromise. The Japanese would continue fighting until every last soldier was dead. With the invasion of the Japanese mainland out of the question due to an estimation of casualties over a million, the atomic bomb seemed like the only option to scare Japan enough to end the war entirely.
