As well as sound, seasons is used as a minor technique to show time/mortality throughout. As time goes on, throughout the film, the seasons change, as does the emotional state of the students. In the beginning the weather appears sunny, Weir has used bright colours and content music to show happiness and composure. However as the film progresses, Neil starts to become stressed and more anxious, this is foreshadowed by a gloomy and cold atmosphere and the music slowly becomes more eerie. After Neil’s death his friend Todd is laying in the snow, his emotions being present. He is cold and miserable, the music gets louder, darker and violent. The use of old fashioned clocks has been used by Weir consistently to represent time running out. The ticking sound of old fashioned clocks is abundant in almost every scene. When situations arise throughout the film the ticking of the timepiece will get louder and more prominent. Towards the end of the film, the ticking overshadows the talking of the students and parents to represent that time has ran out, this occurs only moments before Neil’s death. The themes of time and mortality have been shown through the use of sound repeatedly during the film.
The final theme used throughout the film is conformity. This is demonstrated using various camera angles. Quite often in the film the camera angles are directed so that the parents and teachers
