Deadly Unna
DEADLY UNNA?
1. Describe the impression you form of Gary Black (Blacky) in the first 4 to 5 chapters of the novel.
I get the impression that Blacky has a shy, quiet personality and tends to keep his thoughts to himself. He seems curious because he asks a lot of questions and also anxious because he over thinks situations.
2. Blacky’s community is literally divided into two halves; those who live in The Port and those who live at The Point. Make a list of the features of the town that you think represent life there and explain reasons for choosing them.
Blacky’s community is a small, run down town with little to do and almost everyone knows each other. The Port is a sleepy coastal town. In winter, the only action in town is the local football competition and in summer the action revolves around the beach and the interest provided by the annual campers.
3. Gary grows increasingly anxious as his football team’s Grand Final draws near. Discuss the reasons why Gary is so stressed at this time.
Gary is stressed about the Grand Final because he is playing as the first ruck and he isn’t an overly talented football player. He has to play against the Thumper on the other team and that scares him because the Thumper is very intimidating and could badly injure him if he tries to stop him from getting a goal. Blacky also doesn’t want to be known as a ‘gutless wonder’ and that puts pressure on him to do well.
4. Gary is something of the ‘team hero’ at the end of the Grand Final and is acknowledged with the club’s ‘Best Team Man’ award for the season. Gary appears a little uncomfortable with this recognition, why?
Gary is uncomfortable about being awarded the ‘Best Team Man’ award because his brother has won that award every season, hence why that is his nickname. Blacky was also uncomfortable with the award because it didn’t intend to get in the way of the Thumper, but that’s not what everyone thought.
5. It is obvious that the issue of racism is a significant theme

On December 6th a tragedy rose in Halifax harbor. But no one knew this. The town, in the author’s words “were buzzing with activity. Soft smoke curled from chimneys as mothers served up steaming bowls of oatmeal” (1) This gives a cozy mood. Readers can picture and feel the warmth and the taste of their mom’s oatmeal. Noble Driscoll is a child in this town. He in the author’s words “was fascinated by the vessels that passed in and out of the harbor”, (5) this just shows how clueless the town was. The ships Noble loved, were about to destroy what he calls home.…

Gwynne positions the reader to see this marginalisation through Blacky's eyes, rather than through those of the Aborigines. In this way, criticism of the marginalisation of the Aborigines is stronger because it comes from a member of the Port's white community. It is Blacky who comments that no one at the Port has been to the Peninsula and also there were very few Nungas at the celebration after winning the Premiership. He states "Actually there weren't so many Nungas at the Do. Not when … half of the team was from the Point." (p. 119) Through Blacky, the reader is aware that it is Dumby rather than Blacky who is responsible for the team's victory. Yet the Aborigines do not get the recognition that they truly deserve. This is evident when Mark Arks (who is white) gets the Best On Ground Award, when in reality it is Dumby Red who deserves it. The racist element is foregrounded in the story, especially in the shooting of Dumby Red. Gwynne deliberately constructs Dumby as a cheerful, confident young man who is willing to give his cousin his moment of glory and help his mate Blacky from being beaten. Therefore the reader questions Big Mac, the Pub owner's version of events involving Dumby's death. The Aboriginal community too are marginalised because they are never given a chance to give their point of view; the community simply listens to Big Mac.…

Dumby broke into the local pub with some other friends and happened to get into a fight and sadly got shot by pub owner Big Mac. The whites were not very sympathetic towards Dumby’s shooting as he is an Aboriginal. Quote, “who got shot? dunno, nobody knows, Boongs that’s all I know, serves em right I reckon”. Blacky was asking everyone, his family and friends whether to attend Dumby’s funeral or not. He knew inside that he wouldn’t be welcomed as he would be entering Aboriginal territory if he was to attend. Everyone he asked suggested that it would be a good idea not to go. Quote, “I understand why you want to go, dear. But I don’t think you’d be welcome. It’s for the people out there at the Point. It’s their business, not ours”. Quote, “Mum, Arks, Pickles, Dazza and Darcy – they all had different reasons, nut they all said the same thing: don’t go to Dumby’s funeral. This brings in another theme – determination. Blacky’s new girlfriend Cathy was having a barbeque on the same day as the funeral. But his father “the Old Man” was going to force him to go fishing with him. Not only that, but it was illegal for a white person to go to the Point without permission. After all those thoughts and judgements, Blacky made the decision to attend Dumby’ funeral. He knew it would be the right thing to do, even if he was an Aboriginal or not. He walked all the way to his funeral and has to cross the Point to get there. As he crossed the Point he happened to see Clarence. He told her about how he is going to be attending Dumby’s funeral and Clarence showed him the way to the…

Gary’s town is small and his community has lots of views and values about the aboriginal population. They are very critical and cruel when it comes to racism. The only relation the town has with the aboriginals of the Point is football, though the racial prejudice is still obvious. The town and the aborigines have a combined football team, as alone the people of the Port do not have enough players to make up a full team.…
