Death by Scrabble
In this essay, I am going to compare and contrast the character of husband and wife in “Death by Scrabble” and “Unicorn in the Garden” and observe how their characterization plays an important part in the whole story. Characterization is representation of a character or characters on the stage or in writing, especially by imitating or describing actions, gestures, or speeches. Characterization is also the important part of the story. For some story, the characterization is the purpose of the author.

The plot of the 2 stories has similarities. It has a twist in the end of story and the relation of husband and wife is not harmonized. In “Death by Scrabble”, the husband is hate his wife. He’s expecting the wife to be dead by made words in the magic scrabble that would kill her, but the end of the story is changing. The wife tricked the husband. The one who died was the husband because of the wife made the direct word of Death.

In the “Unicorn in the Garden”, just the reverse of “Death by Scrabble”. The wife’s hate his husband and want to get rid the husband. Just after the husband out of the house, she wakes up and gets dresses up then calls the police and psychiatrist. She expecting that the husband is crazy and the psychiatrist would take the husband to the asylum. After the husband get home, he tricked his wife because he so upset when his wife called him a booby. He lies that he don’t say such a word that unicorn is exist. Then the one to be take to the asylum is the wife not the husband.

All the characters had a similarity. They all wicked. They hates their partners. Their marriage is not run smoothly. So, they decided to get rid their partners with such way but in the end, the plan doesn’t run as they want to be.

The husband character in “Death by Scrabble” are a scrabble maniac-“it's a blistering hot Sunday afternoon and all I can think of to do with my life is to play Scrabble.”(“Death by Scrabble”, page 1), vengeful-“I

Characterization is the process of an author developing a character's qualities or personality by describing him or her in a fictional story. In the short story “ The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford, a hunter, is trying to keep himself alive on Ship Trap Island, where a nefarious man named General Zaroff is hunting him for sport. Rainsford and Zaroff the two men going toe-to-toe are shown through characterization that they contrast and compare from each other.…

Characterization is the combination of all the things and author does to create the personality of a character in a piece of literature. For example, throughout the story, the read learns a lot about the character of Jack. We learn that he is a very determined young boy. He does not like to give up when he fails; he likes to keep going until he is successful. In the beginning of the novel, Ralph, Jack, and Simon come across a pig and Jack wants to kill it for meat. Jack attempts to kill it and fails, but he becomes very determined to kill one before they left the island. During chapter three, entitled "Huts on the Beach," Jack is once again not successful in the killing of the pig and becomes sad all over again. He stabs the pig but is unable to kill it. Throughout chapter seven, the boys are still trying to hunt down the pig but he gets away, once again. Finally, during chapter eight, the pig is finally killed. Jack becomes determined and awfully savage, killing the pig with his boys after torturing him continuously. (page 138) This proves the quote is valid because it shows that Jack kept failing along with the other boys, and his characteristic of determination kept him going until he learned from it and…

These authors use characterization as a literary element. For example in the story Nethergrave, Jeremy’s parent’s characterizations have abandoned and neglected Jeremy emotionally for the majority of his life. It is different for his friends, as for Jeremy’s online friends it is insecure and worried about how others view them, as Jeremy appears to be. The guys do not show the whole truths about who they really are, they are all thinking that is the only way that the rest of them will accept them. There are things about each of the people in the group that Jeremy does not know of. Characterization in Sound of Thunder was Eckels nervousness, it shows this by many of his actions for example, Ray Bradbury writes “Eckels swayed on the padded seat, his face pale, his jaw stiff. He felt the trembling in his arms, and he looked down and found his hands tight on the new rifle.” (70) Once the time machine returns with Eckels and some employees, things seem to be very different to him. Eckels can’t read the sign and when he ask’s a strange man who won the presidential election, the man tells Eckels that a another candidate is in office. The man says “You joking? You know very well. Deutscher, of course!”(460) This candidate was the one who was President when he left. Those are a couple ways both authors use characterization in their…

Another consequence of grudges, revenge and feuds are the feeling of aggression towards one another. In the short story, “Death By Scrabble” by Charlie Fish, a husband and wife are playing an intense game of scrabble on a hot summer day. The husband holds onto the grudge of loathing his wife and doing dull activities like playing scrabble on Sunday afternoons. During this game, the husband continues to contribute powerful and adverse words and comments about his wife. The text states “My cousin Harold swallowed a bee when he was nine, his throat swelled up and he dies. I hope that if they are bees, they fly into my wife’s throat… She plays SWEATIER, using all her letters. 24 points plus a 50 point bonus. If it wasn’t too hot to move, I would strangle her right now.” (Fish, 1) Here,…

In the short story, “Death by Scrabble”, Charles Fish painted the picture of a man and his wife playing Scrabble. They both were evidently bored, and as the story is written from the man’s point of view, he revealed that he hated his wife. He felt that his wife had taken over his life, “I don’t think I’ve spoken to anyone except my wife since Thursday morning. On Thursday morning, I spoke to the milkman.” On this Sunday afternoon, he came to the realization that he hated his wife so much that he wanted to kill her. He kept looking for words in his game that spelled out something that had to do with death. He began to notice a pattern with how whatever word he played on the board, something relevant happened. He experimented his theory and played the word “quake.” Just as the room began to shake, his wife played the word “death.” He choked on the tile he was chewing on in his mouth, and he died. As he did, his wife just sat there and watched. Fish had an underlying theme that seemed to be telling the reader that one shouldn’t settle, but instead live life to its full potential while one can.…

Charlie Fish describes a rather unfortunate turn of events for a man playing a simple game with his wife in “Death by Scrabble.” The first few paragraphs describe a very aggravated man who has much hatred built up towards his wife and the heat. While initially it is hard to figure out if the man is being sarcastic with his crude comments, Fish allows his seriousness to shine when our protagonist wishes death upon his wife. The events following come out of no where when in the end, the man is the one to die.…

It's a hot day and I hate my roommate. We're playing Scrabble. That's how bad it is. I'm 22 years old, it's a blistering hot Sunday afternoon and all I can think of to do with my life is to play Scrabble. I should be out, doing exercise, spending money, meeting people. I don't think I've spoken to anyone except my roommate since Thursday morning. On Thursday morning I spoke to the milkman. My letters are crap. I play, appropriately, BEGIN. With the N on the little pink star. Twenty-two points. I watch my roommate’s smug expression as he rearranges his letters. Clack, clack, clack. I hate him. If he wasn't around, I'd be doing something interesting right now. I'd be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. I'd be starring in the latest Hollywood blockbuster. I'd be sailing the Vendee Globe on a 60-foot clipper called the New Horizons - I don't know, but I'd be doing something. He plays JINXED, with the J on a double-letter score. 30 points. He's beating me already. Maybe I should kill him. If only I had a D, then I could play MURDER. That would be a sign. That would be permission. I start chewing on my U. It's a bad habit, I know. All the letters are frayed. I play WARMER for 22 points, mainly so I can keep chewing on my U. As I'm picking new letters from the bag, I find myself thinking - the letters will tell me what to do. If they spell out KILL, or STAB, or his name, or anything, I'll do it right now. I'll finish him off. My rack spells MIHZPA. Plus the U in my mouth. Damn. The heat of the sun is pushing at me through the window. I can hear buzzing insects outside. I hope they're not bees. My cousin Harold swallowed a bee when he was nine, his throat swelled up and he died. I hope that if they are bees, they fly into my roommate's throat. He plays SWEATIER, using all his letters. 24 points plus a 50 point bonus. If it wasn't too hot to move I would strangle him right now. I am getting sweatier. It needs to rain, to…

As the story opens we find a man sitting at home eating breakfast with his wife upstairs asleep. The man, who chooses to glory in his existence by rising and eating, is blessed with the spectacle of a unicorn in his garden. The man is happy. The unicorn eats his roses. The wife has chosen to sleep and ignore the beautiful day, but in so doing has negated further choices she might have made had she woken up. The two times the man attempts to wake his wife to the life around her and in the garden, she further confirms her lack of interest in life and living the moment that has presented itself. The wife ignores and insults her husband for believing that a unicorn exists. Her own idea of what is real is subjective to what she has witnessed thus far, which could be anything or nothing. She is entropic. The wife-not referred to as a woman or even given a name-is only referred to as an extension of the man.…

The problems of the story started because of money, connections and jealousy of the hunchback to result loneliness of the wife, if the wife wasn’t lonely her husband and the minstrels will not die, and she will not hide the three hunchbacks to his husband. But for me what the wife does in the end of the story which she hired a man to throw the dead bodies of the three hunchbacks but tricking the payment for the man and that makes the man hot-headed that makes him ferocious to his surrounding and that’s when the husband is in the way to go home and then he tasted the ferocity of the man and when the husband reach the mansion he died if it’s a normal wife which is loving and caring you would expect it to cry but this wife for me feels freedom and instead of giving proper bury for the husband she also hired the man to throw the dead body of the husband. Now we see the effect of not giving freedom to someone which will cause to have no feelings toward the person and being tricky to everyone.…
