October 4, 2012 Since the invention of the radio, its popularity had grown immensely into the 1990s making news, music and entertainment available for people all across the nation. The radio had given people availability to immediate news, unlike newspapers which were not printed until the next day or magazines which were printed on a monthly basis. The radio also gave recording artists the opportunity to have their music heard consequently giving listeners the opportunity to hear the music without having to pay for it. With 99% of Americans families owning a radio, it had become established as the most popular house hold entertainment item in America. Much advancement was made to the radio since its invention to make it more clear and widespread, but it is now believed that advancements may ultimately lead to the “death of traditional radio”. While it still has vast importance in society today, it seems as though traditional radio is losing its popularity due to technological advancements such as satellite radio, social media and internet radio. Internet radio has become increasingly popular throughout the last ten years. With the invention of smartphones, many people, including myself, listen to Pandora radio. They can be streamed from the app on a phone, as well as from the internet on a computer. But Pandora is not the only online radio option. While it has taken some listeners away from traditional radio, iHeart Radio has truly revolutionized it, causing traditional radio to make changes in the way they operate. My thoughts direct to the statement Jesse Rasmussen made about the importance of traditional radio stations streaming online.
