Death of a salesman

The setting of Death of a Salesman takes place mostly in Willy Loman's home and backyard, but in the scenes where he is not in the house, we see him get fired in an office building and meeting his sons in a restaurant. Also, a good bit of the play takes place in Willy's mind. The story takes place in the 1940's when we had just ended WWII. The plot of the story was very interesting. Willy's wife Linda persuades Willy to ask his boss to let him work in New York so he won't have to travel. Willy asks his boss and ends up getting fired. Willy's son visits and he tells him to make something of himself. Biff tells Linda that Willy is a fake, and then Linda explains to him that he tried to commit suicide. A quote that characterizes Willy is "There's more people! That's what's ruining this country! The competition is maddening! Smell the stink from that apartment house! And the one on the other side... How can they whip cheese?" In this quote, Willy insists that the reason his family is doing so bad is due to population growth. There are many themes in this novel. Some of these include, American Dreams, Abandonment, and Betrayal. Willy talks mostly about the abandonment of his sons, the american dreams he once had, and the betrayal of his two sons and wife.
Some of the motifs in this novel include, the American West, Alaska, and the African Jungle. He works out in the west, but live in New york. He traveled to alaska when he should have traveled to Africa where he could have made millions with his brother who found a secret diamond mine. Millers connetction to Death of a Salesman was a very close connection. He was crazy and he knew he was. Willy was very much dedicatecd to the death of the American Dream when he realized he lost everything because of the stock market. Miller had a very dark style of writing.
