What is culture? Culture includes knowledge, beliefs, morals, arts, customs, law, and various other elements needed by man as a member of a group. People acquire the elements of their culture through enculturation. When analyzing culture one can study a group’s symbols, language, and kinesics. Moreover, the environment influences how people interact in their culture. In order to study how the environment influences people, we will be analyzing how men and women behave in particular environments and how these observations relate to Deborah Tannen’s and Macionis Wester’s stereotypes. They explained that they did not have enough time to study for the test because of other weekend plans. One of the males talked about how he lost his basketball game because one of the players was not playing to their full potential. It was evident that this male was very angry. One metamessage that Kishen observed was when the male said, “The game went like shit.” While this does not literally mean that the game was indeed feces, rather he meant to convey that the game did not have a desirable outcome. The males used their hands a lot during their conversation. They were also generally smiling and laughing the whole time. Their posture was laid back as they were just friends. Additionally, the males were both in casual dress. Thus, they did not have to act professional in the setting they were in.
Next, Rawan observed how males and females talked and interacted in Panera. Rawan chose to observe Panera at 2:30pm. Rawan specifically chose this time because she expected to find various types of meetings, since it was not a typical time for lunch or dinner. This would allow her to observe people who had other purposes for meeting besides just for a meal. The environment was generally loud with some background music. Additionally, the setting in Panera was a series of private spaces due to the various tables and
