At times lies have the ability to make one believe there is more than one alternative or doubt the best alternative. How we perceive our choices can be affected through deception. Deception can initiate actions a person is likely to choose as well as prevent actions by covering up the truth. People use deception in many situations such as to avoid hurting someone’s feelings, getting out of trouble, etc. While others use deception to purposely manipulate or gain power. It can have a negative effect and often the persons causing the deception adds another lie to keep the story going. They face different issues and concerns. The deceivers usually view lying as an opportunity to gain power. They are able to justify their decision to lie by the rewards received. Bok talks about liars preferring a “free-rider” status in which they can lie without being lied to. However, this is an exception rather than the ordinary. Liars seek special reasons to lie but almost always overlook the harm it causes. First of all, the initial lie affects the liar as well as the need to tell more lies to keep things mended. Keeping all of the lies straight places a tremendous strain on the liar and the web of lies becomes more and more tangled. It becomes more easily for the liar to lie and his perception becomes warped. He views the risks less than the rewards he feels he will
