Deep And Dark And Dangerous Ali, By Mary Downing Hahn

I think Ali’s and SIssy’s relationship is a big part of Mary Downing Hahn’s “ deep and dark and dangerous.” I think there relationship brings a lot of drama, fights and tension in the book. I also think that whenever Sissy taunts emma about something it is important to this story as well.

In the story Deep and Dark and Dangerous Ali and Sissy are very against each other and fight or argue every time they see each other. For example on page 61 Ali told Emma it is rude to whisper but when she said that Sissy jumped in and said “so? nobody invited you to play with us.” This shows us as a reader that even though Ali has something to say sissy has something to go with it, and it is almost always negative. Also on page 61 Ali said “ if anyone should go home, you should”
After that Ali thought to herself “I wanted to slap Sissy's nasty little face but I knew that would only make things worse.” This shows us as readers that they can’t get along now matter what they do. Also all of this is important to the whole text because this relationship or dialogue reveal the antagonist which is Sissy because it shows that she is very negative and does things to get Ali riled up. Also by doing this it makes their relationship get so bad that Ali doesn't want anything to do with Sissy which gives her more time to gain Emma’s trust and potentially do something to her. Speaking of Emma Sissy also taunts her and says mean things to her because Sissy wants power. For example on page 59 Ali told Emma she can’t jump off the dock without her mother but after that Sissy said “Do you do everything mommy says” are you a little goody-goody girl? Even though Sissy says mean things
