Theory Research Paper
Define Theory. Theory can be defined as “a set of concepts linked through propositions to provide an explanation of a phenomenon” (Schmidt & Brown, 2012, p. 124). A nursing theory is a set of concepts, definitions, relationships, and assumptions or propositions derived from nursing models or from other disciplines and project a purposive, systematic view of phenomena by designing specific inter-relationships among concepts for the purposes of describing, explaining, predicting, and /or prescribing.
Do you think all nursing research should be based on one of these theories? Why or why not? There are many different theories that apply to nursing. I believe that all nursing in practice should base on nursing theories and research. The only way we can validate a theory is with research, therefore, yes, all nursing research should be based on a theory. The only way we can establish a nursing theory is from our clinical experiences and evidence-based nursing. This is where nursing counsels gather nurses …show more content…
information, complaints or suggestions regarding their actual hands on time with patients. I believe that every theory should be tried in an actual clinical setting before applied to new rule or change. Not all theories will provide protection, promotion, and optimize health and abilities, prevent illness or injury to our patients.
Define the following terms:
Case Study: A case study is when a single patient with a specific disease or diagnosis is outlined in a research environment.
Ethnographic research: It is the study of a person’s culture, learning, observing, and interacting with the people or group being studied in the group’s own environment. This is usually done over a long period of time. This is considered to be the method of choice when studying a particular culture.
Phenomenology:
This is a research method that involves studying participants that have already lived through a specific event in their life. For example, the study of a person who is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis later in life.
Grounded theory: Research related to the process of how one copes or handles the response to a phenomena. Example, how a person copes or deals with the diagnosis of multiple
sclerosis.
Empiricism:
A theory that states that all information is objectively collected through the use of all five senses. It is used to confirm or deny a hypothesis.
Triangulation:
This is a research method used to combine or integrate two research methods in the same case study to provide a more accurate outcome.
