Definition Of Happiness
Happiness is an amazing thing in this world. Since the days of Aristotle, happiness was thought to have at least two aspects which are pleasure and a life well lived. According to psychology, happiness is referred to as simply pleasure and meaning (Let’s put the things). A psychologist named Dr. Martin Selignman had recently added a new component to the definition of happiness: engagement (Let’s put the things). Engagement refers to living a “good life” of work, family and hobbies. But how does a person become happy? Some people would say from relaxing and treating yourself and some may even say by getting or being rich. Most times happiness is derived from helping others but it can also depend on ourselves according to Aristotle. Helping …show more content…
Giving connects us to others. It has the ability to create a stronger communication as well as build a happier society for everyone. A way to make our happiness in ourselves grow is by doing things for other people whether it is something small or even by volunteering to help out (Let’s put the things). It is a powerful way to boost happiness in people around us including our family. Giving is not just about money. You do not have to be rich or wealthy to give happiness to others. A way to happiness is by doing something genuine and out of the goodness of your heart. It could be by saying a compliment, smile, lending someone a helping hand or even by just supporting someone through a difficult time in their life. Giving someone your full and divided attention is a way to make someone very happy. These things can mean just as much or even more than financial gifts. Scientific studies show that helping others can boost happiness (Let’s put the things). It is proven to increase life …show more content…
First happiness helps helping. People who are happy tend to want to help other people than a person who is not. They are more likely to have spent some of their time or money helping others (Post). A way to increase happiness is by volunteering. People who donate to charity or spent money on gifts for others were found to be happier than those who did not spend money on others, and this was regardless of income level (Anik). While it has been assumed that giving also leads to greater happiness, this has only recently been started to be scientifically proven. For example according to actionforkindess.org, “when participants in a study did five new acts of kindness one day per week over a six-week period, even if each act was small, they experienced an increase in well-being compared to control groups.” Also “In another study, participant who were given five dollars or twenty dollars to spend on others or donate to charity experienced greater happiness than people given the same amount to spend on themselves” (Let’s put the things). The amount of money that the people were given did have anything to do with how much happiness they had. When someone is happy it makes them want to give more to others than when they are sad. This can lead to a higher tendency to give and so on (Vallant). This not only affects Americans but it is consistent across many different cultures as well. It makes sense

The true contents of happiness are stated in the article “A Formula for Happiness” by Arthur C. Brooks, the president of the American Enterprise Institute. Brooks states that people realize life and view happiness depending on genes, one-time events and basic values: faith, family, community and work. He pays special attention to the last one. According to Brooks, meaningful work and success considered as passion can make people happier. Brooks cites as an example Franklin D. Roosevelt’s words: “Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money;…

In the short essay of “What Happiness Is” by Eduardo Porter, he gives explicit details pertaining to the complex word, happiness. In its own term, happiness is defined as, the state of being happy. According to Porter’s findings on happiness, he says that psychologists and economists believe this: “Most psychologists and economists who study happiness agree that what they prefer to call “subjective well-beings” comprises three parts: satisfaction meant to capture how people judge their lives measured up against their aspirations; positive feelings like joy; and the absence of negative feelings like anger” (457). Porter suggests that this does exist and that because it does it helps individuals through certain times, like: hardships, economy, family, country, sickness, and even death. He is saying that because happiness exists, individuals are able to overcome obstacles in their life, and are able to live longer and healthier. Porter does focus on the main issues and key abstract views of the word happiness. He covers important issues, by giving detail; he talks about the views of psychologists and economists’ views. “ In 1980s a new discipline called Prospect Theory—also known as behavioral economics—deployed the tools of psychology to analyze economic behavior” (458).…

For centuries, society has shaped these abstract ideas of what happiness means and how one could achieve happiness in their lives. However, in order to even understand what actions could lead to one’s happiness, one must be able to understand the definition of happiness itself. Having read Charles Dicken’s book Great Expectations, happiness persists as a pleasure or sense of a meaningful and rich psychosocial integration in a person’s understanding of himself or herself.…

Everyone's goal in life is to be “happy”, they go out of their way to fulfill temporary pleasures. But what is very ironic is that striving for this possession filled happiness, many become sad, weary and give up on their dream of so called “happiness”. Achor defines happiness as, “the experience of positive emotions - pleasure combined with deeper feelings of meaning and purpose” (Achor 39). When the definition is put into those terms, I can really understand that I’ve settles for less as my definition of “happiness”. My definition of happiness is almost more accurately a definition of “content”. I am merely satisfied with my life. I, like so many others, have fallen into the trap of believing true happiness will come with success. Based on Achor’s research, this idealism is completely false. His research suggests that happiness causes success. In this section of the book, Achor goes on to say that, “happiness makes us more thoughtful, creative, and…

The definition of what it means to truly obtain and achieve happiness in life has been explored by hundreds of philosophers over the decades. In spite of this being the case for the subject, not one of these philosophers have found an exact answer to such a question. One cannot measure happiness and its capacity. As a result of this, people have no choice but to determine their own judgement of what happiness is to them. This judgement can easily be affected by an individual’s situation and the problems that they will inevitably face.…

Can happiness be found in everyday life? In the articles, “The Pursuit of Happiness,” “Just for the Joy of it,” and “Get out of the Groove,” each author suggests different ways that people may acquire happiness. People are constantly trying to find happiness in some aspect of their lives. For some, it may be easy for them to feel happy, but for others, it may be a continuous difficulty. Not everyone will experience happiness equally, because no person is identical to another. Everyone is different, meaning that it is reasonable to suggest that they encounter different methods for acquiring happiness. Some ways that the authors agree or disagree that happiness may be pursued include how much people are willing to do to be happy, discovering natural tendencies in humans, and focusing on the simple things in life.…

Simply, people cannot be “truly happy” if everything that makes them happy is just material possessions. There will be some individuals that will not agree on this, however, at some point, they will realize that they were lying to themselves. In accordance with Emily Esfahani in her article, “Meaning is Healthier than Happiness,” she explains how happiness without meaning equates to a void in people’s life and might even be unhealthy. To put it briefly, happiness is contributing to society, and caring about others. After all, compassion is what makes up a human being. In other words, happiness does not mean to only receive and have it all with ease. In agreement with Esfahani, this “false type of happiness” is only a sense of feeling good, not exactly as “true happiness,” and usually prolongs for a while. After this sense is over, people return to their feeling of emptiness. On the other hand, meaning means to contribute others or to society in a bigger way. Consequently, this act of kindness boost people’s self-esteem and make them even healthier. As a description, Esfahani describes a study in which people who are happy, but lack meaning in their lives, have the same gene expression as people who are going through harsh times. That is to say, the activation of a stress-related gene pattern is present in a happy, but not necessarily meaningful person while people who have meaning in their lives…

We often consider ourselves enjoying or having fun while hanging out with friends or having a nice dinner with family. But Aristotle’s theory identifies attaining happiness as a life-long process based on the virtues and characteristics one develops throughout his life. A game of cricket is considered to be a good game only after both the teams have played their innings. Similarly, it is hard to predict one’s life to be happy until it is over. Human beings possess a proper function that identifies happiness as the highest good.…

The “Pleasant Life” is living your life with as much pleasure and positivity as possible and using your skills to increase your happiness (Tiller 2012). However, there are shortcomings to the “pleasant life” which are that people tend to get bored of the activities that make them happy and that is lacks flexibility. Seligman’s research has contributed to the field of positive psychology by helping people acquire the skills to be able to handle life in a more positive way. According to Seligman, there are three components of happiness: 1) pleasure, 2) engagement with one’s family, work, romance, and 3) meaning (Wallis 2005). Each type of happiness is connected to positive emotions with a sequence from gratification to strengths to purpose.…

Second, the economic success couldn’t bring spiritual happiness for people. People should focus on spiritual happiness more than the economic success. For instance, one of the richest people in the world Warren Buffet, he donated thirty billion dollars for the charity, because he knows when it comes to money, “giving” can always get more happiness than “receiving”, and donation is one way that he can gain happiness from it.…

    Money and Happiness

It is often noticed that people with a higher income live a more relaxed life while the truth of the matter is their money allows them to easily take care of the necessities in life such as food and clothing that other people may not be able to maintain. Therefore, in comparison to those types of people, the ones with more money generally appear more fulfilled because they are able to purchase other desires without the worry of not sustaining a steady lifestyle. Having more money provides relief for the person rather than happiness because of their ability to obtain new possessions. Giving is better than receiving is a commonly used phrase that shows the generosity among different people; however, when it used as an argument debating happiness, it is proven to be too vague to fit the modern day definition. A recent study by Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton explains that the “most satisfying way of using money is to invest in others…donating to a charity…buying lunch for a friend” (Can Money Buy Happiness?). Their argument demonstrates that putting their money towards other people rather than themselves brings an even greater joy, but how does that differ from paying taxes? Taxes are provided for many reasons such as donating to shelters, paying for government workers, and maintaining roads, so why are the citizens upset about the requirement of investing a portion of their income to the government when the investment in others brings happiness? Consequently, the satisfaction of giving money to others does not always apply to all even if it is for charities. Because happiness is based on an individual’s perspective, a person’s outlook on what makes them happy may vary from someone else’s. Happiness is something compared to everyone else; some people appear happier than others. It is an individual perception, and it is influence by a variety of factors such as society, family, relationship status, health, occupation, love, and even income. The question in today’s…

The definition for happiness is the mental or emotional state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from gratification to intense joy. Though this is a reasonable explanation, happiness can mean many different things to other people, for it is a concept that can vary significantly according to context or conditions. It is because of this variety of interpretation that psychologists emerged and tried to determine these distinctive concepts of happiness, in order to help the public change their negative style of thinking as a way to make normal life more fulfilling. Psychologists have studied the nature of happiness for quite some time, but there are some who are cynical about whether we can or even should study happiness. One psychologist by the name of William James believed that his own field of positive psychology was no science at all, as it is only “the hope for a science.” James’s pessimism, in relation to psychological science, brings up the question, “is it truly possible to study happiness when we undermine our experiences of this concept by focusing on achieving it?”…
