There is a false truth to the word nerve. The courage it takes to have nerve is powerful, but having nerves is a weakness. A soldier in a battle needs confidence, and not worry or otherwise every action will be filled with doubt. The commander says, “No nerves, just have nerve out there.” The difference between the same word emphasizes the actual meaning of each word, creating it to be more heroic than a hero and braver than just the brave. One of the many definitions for nerve is “a person’s steadiness, courage, and a sense of purpose when facing a demanding situation.” The positive connotation to this word is similar to courage. Being called courageous is something that is pleasant to the ear. Having steadiness, is not growing weak and not wavering in anything you do. In combat, you cannot grow weak otherwise you will be beat. A sense of purpose reaches to a new level, where you have the confidence to know what’s
happening is right, like the soldier on the battlefield knowing his purpose for serving the people he loves. Nerve isn’t meant to be taken lightly, it goes farther beyond what courage could ever contain; it includes steadiness and an idea of purpose.

In multiple, stories, movies, and famous quotes talking about nerve is what sets the piece apart. Everyone wants to been seen as courageous and strong like nerve portrays. J.K. Rowling says, “You sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.” Having enough confidence takes you very far in life and that’s what nerve is. The positivity in having nerve is rewarding and special to this word.
Overall, it goes farther than confidence. Margaret Atwood says, “You need a certain amount of nerve to be a writer.” The real struggle to have nerve is portrayed in Margaret’s statement. Sharing writing and personal thoughts takes a lot of self assurance, which also matches the definition of nerve. Although these writers may not be comparing nerve to a soldier, they understand the nerve put into any job. These writers both agree with the power that comes along with nerve, and the beauty that you can do once you have gained it, like a soldier gaining freedom for their
country.
As much as nerve can be a compliment it can be quite the opposite. Having nerves is defined as “a person’s mental state, in the extent to which they are agitated or worried.” A word defined as multiple things is not as shocking as a word being defined as one of its antonyms. Being agitated or worried is no where near understanding your purpose. Having nerves is seen as a weakness ready to be exploited by any enemy coming, but the fact is, that no one would ever come at someone with nerve. The worry and unsteadiness that comes with nerves is nowhere near ready for battle.
Nerves before a recital, entering a battlefield, or anything in between are common. However, it’s not like having confidence. Novak Djokovic says, “I had to listen to the classical music because it calms me down, calms my nerves down.” In order to perform well his nerves must be released, because they are weakness. The servicemen/women doesn’t have time to calm his nerves, just time for deep breaths if they’re lucky. The difference between nerve and nerves, is simple, the soldier wants one but not the other.
Nerve is to assured as nerve is to worry. This may not make sense considering the exact same word means the opposites of each other, but this is true. One word can mislead you into believing the opposite scenario, but the meaning of each word is one extremity to another.
