Dehumanization began to occur when over the radio, Hutu extremists labeled the Tutsi as, “cockroaches”, and “devils.” This dehumanization led to the organization of genocide, where groups of civilians who trained for the inevitable massacre, and other Hutus were given machetes and encouraged to kill the Tutsi. Polarization occurred when Hutu extremists killed other Hutus who sympathized with the Tutsi. Preparation took place when the Tutsi population was forced to go to desolate lands and were starved. And extermination had begun take place when the trained civilians began massacring the Tutsi. Finally, denial occurred when the genocide ended and the oppressors fled to the Congo. It is alarming, seeing the rate at which the Tutsi population is decreasing, in as little as a month. One plus, which will not only immediately benefit the Tutsi, but also benefit the UN in the future; when the conflict ends, who will the newly instated government thank for assisting them in their times of need? The UN. Keeping the Peacekeepers in Rwanda will strengthen foreign ties, and give an overall good image of the Council. In addition, the show of resilience in the UN will give other countries with civil issues the impression that should they commit genocide, the UN council will not hesitate to come and prevent it, discouraging neighboring enemies from going to those lengths of murder.
Lastly, I would like to address the imperialism that worked behind the scenes in Rwanda. When the elite of Belgium came and ordered that the people of Rwanda be further separated through the use of identification cards, that was imperialism in the works. Moves like this from governments should be closely monitored, and even prevented as to not incite anything similar
