In Hinduism, the universe is thought to regenerate in cycles. Shiva destroys the universe at the end of each cycle which then allows for a new creation. Shiva saved the gods and the world from destruction by swallowing the poison of Vasuki, (a serpent the gods used to produce the water of life).

What are the characteristics of the Great Mother?
Gaia, or Gaea, was the creator and giver of birth to the Earth and all of the Universe. The heavenly gods, the Titans, and the Giants were all born to her. Gaia was seen as a buxom, matronly woman, half risen from the earth in Greek vase painting. She was seen as inseparable from her native element. She is often clothed in green in mosaic art.
How did the Great Mother protect or look after humanity?
Gaia was the Earth Mother. She was worshipped as the source of life. Out of Gaia’s body came the necessary nourishment and she had the capability of giving new birth to objects that had since been dead. She would give life, even though it caused her to wither up. She was the guardian of the dead and the executor of birth and rebirth.
