1A) A definition of the term dementia.
Dementia is a progressive disease of the brain where the brain is damaged which is terminal , depending on which part of the brain is affected is to what type of dementia it is , examples are Alzheimer’s , Picks , vascular and Parkinson’s disease , these conditions can affect every aspects of the person’s life , affecting short term memory , mobility , sight and how thoughts are processed , and how the person views the world themselves and how they feel they are being treated by others.
Four types of dementia
Picks disease
Is where the frontal lobe of the brain is damaged which causes a varying affect with behaviour, emotional responses and language skills and mobility, Picks is often associated with younger people and can often change the personality of the person and as an example the person may start to undress in public and gorge food and this is due to them losing their inhibitions . Vascular Demtia
Vascular dementia often affects every person differently and usually caused by a stroke or a blockage to a blood vessel with varies symptoms to include, anxiety and depression, severe confusion in set periods, seizures and memory problems, partial weakness which could affect mobility, speech and co-ordination.
Lewy bodies
This can affect men and women equally and is generally a progressive disease in which leads to being terminal affecting the person’s attention and alertness later progressions show signs the same as Parkinson’s , to include mobility poor walking to represent a shuffle and tend to shake at times, can lead to hallucinations . Alzheimer’s disease is most common cause of dementia affecting around 490000 people in the UK alone , the symptoms can include mood changes quite quickly where the mood swings , loss of memory , changes in behaviour and problems communicating and simple reasoning , depression and affects the short term memory , individuals find it
