Demi Lovato Analysis

Demi Lovato is a teen star that starred on Disney channel. She is also an actress and singer that went through a period of hurting herself. She opened up about her bulimia and cutting. "I was compulsively overeating when I was eight years old," she said. "So, I guess, for the past 10 years I've had a really unhealthy relationship with food (Johnston).” At age 11, Lovato began cutting herself -- intentionally self-mutilating her wrists as a way of coping with emotions (Johnston). In “Skyscraper”, personification, simile and imagery are used by Demi Lovato to express her struggles and how she overcomes them. In the first line of the song, there is a personification used. “Skies are crying, I am watching, Catching teardrops in my hands. ("Demi Lovato - Skyscraper lyrics, 1”) The skies are giving human like qualities by crying. It was an artistic way to refer to rain while evoking emotion from the audience ("Allison’s Blog"). According to ABC news, Demi said, "It was a way of expressing my own shame, of myself, on my own body," she told Roberts. “I was matching the inside to the outside. Lovato uses similes to highlight her weakness through the lines “like I’m made of glass, like I’m made of paper ("Allison’s Blog").” “Like I’m made of glass”, she is comparing herself to glass which is very Fragile and easy to break. Another one is, “Like I’m made of paper” ("Demi Lovato - Skyscraper lyrics, 7"). She feels like very powerless and just goes with the flow and feels like anything can rip her apart. Lastly, “I will be rising from the ground/ like a skyscraper ("Demi Lovato - Skyscraper lyrics, 9-10")”. She compares herself to a skyscraper to show that nothing will make her stay down and she will rise and overcome this difficult obstacle and will become stronger than ever
