Lab report 1: Density
Purpose: The purpose of this lab was experimentally determining the familiarization between volumetric and gravimetric using common equipment.
Procedure:
Equipment: Objects for density determination – a metals, and Teflon ball 50 mL graduated cylinder 100 mL graduated cylinder 50 mL beaker Electronic balance Calcaulator Water Ammonium sulfate Step:
Part 1.Measurment of the density of a solid
1. Three metal objects were selected for density determination: a metals, and Teflon ball.
2. Make sure each object was determined by weighing on an electronic balance.
3. Add 25 mL of water to the graduated cylinder. Precisely measure this volume of water. Add another 25 mL of distilled water to the graduated cylinder. Again, precisely measure this volume of water, and then measure the combined mass. Repeat Step 3 to obtain a third set. Use the 100 Ml
Part 2.Measurment of the density of a liquid
4. Prepare dry and clean 25mL graduated cylinder. Balance should be zero first.
5. Note the volume of the meniscus after fill the cylinder by two third with water. Add a solution of least salt after pour out the water and add about 15mL of salt to the cylinder. Weight the cylinder for ZERO balance.
6. Wash the cylinder and fill the cylinder to about 15mL of next salt solution Record the mass. Repeat the above for the next three higher salt concentrations. After you have recorded for all measurements of the entire standard, collect sample from the common area.
7. Wash the cylinder with a small amount of dispenses a sample of about 15mL, conclude the volume and weight. Enter the volume and mass data in your sheet.
8. Density for all objects was calculated using the formula:
Mass
Density = ------------ Volume
