Dental Hygienists do more than clean teeth. There are seven professional roles in the profession of dental hygiene. These roles include educator, researcher, entrepreneur, administrator, advocate, clinician, and public health. The role of a dental hygienist as an educator is to teach oral health professionals using educational theory and methodology. As a clinician, dental hygienists work together with health professionals to provide patient care. Examples of employment include working at a school, hospital, or long-term facilities (Wilkins et al., 2017).…
I remember clearly as a young boy, going to my father’s work, to visit for a routine checkup and people asking me, “are you gonna clean teeth like your daddy?” I would look at them with the utmost confusion, as to why I would want to put my fingers in another person’s mouth. All my life I had been raised around the dental field with my dad asking me every morning and every night if I brushed my teeth and flossed, or standing right behind me watching the brushing strokes to make sure I wasn’t cutting the cleaning short. As a kid I did as I was told but it was never my dream to be a dentist, dental hygienist, or be involved in the dental field in any way. When I was in eighth grade, I fell in love with history and archaeology, and my dad as one…
While reading Watchful Care: A History of America's Nurse Anesthetists by Marianne Bankert, it seems evident that the progression of the Nurse Anesthesia profession is borne by individuals who deemed Evidence-Based Practice a necessity. A search of a formal definition of Evidence-Based Practice turned out to be a futile endeavor, as the concept has evolved with time. Nevertheless, three basic tenets are considered paramount from it; “best available research evidence, patient values (or preferences) and clinical expertise” (McFadden &Thiemann, 2009). A pursuit of these tenants can be seen throughout our profession's history by these “invisible providers” (Bankert, 1989, p.15). These actions have kept the anesthetist knowledgeable and experts…
1. Have you ever thought about your teeth and why they are there? Teeth are everywhere if you think about it almost every living thing has some form of teeth. A person’s teeth are different in many ways people can have disgusting, yellow teeth or a pearly white smile! Teeth may not be interesting to most people, in fact many would probably think that working in someone else's mouth all day is repulsive. Although I happen to be the opposite, I’ve been interested in teeth since I was little. With that being said, my occupation is to become a dental hygienist and enable people to feel more confident about their smile!…
Dental visits aren’t just keeping your mouth healthy but your whole body. Most people don’t know that the bacteria in the mouth can cause low birth weights, strokes, heart disease, and diabetes. Scientists have found that the mouth and systemic health are linked. For example, the “bacteria on your teeth and gums could travel through your bloodstream and attach to fatty plaques in your arteries making the plaques become more swollen. If one of the plaques bursts and causes a blood clot to form, you can have a heart attack or stroke” (Mayo). Keeping your regular cleaning appointments, brushing two times a day, flossing, replacing your tooth brush every three to four months, and a healthy diet are the way to a health mouth and body.…
A dental hygienist typically cleans teeth by brushing them with a powerful cleaning tool and flossing between teeth. There are a variety of things included in a dental hygienist’s daily routine, and I enjoy that fact because it won’t be boring doing the same things over and over again. Dental hygienists take and examine oral X-rays, make impressions of patients’ teeth for studying purposes, and apply sealants to shield teeth. Dental hygienists also recommend oral care routines to patients to ensure that they maintain a healthy mouth.…
Dentists diagnose and treat problems with teeth and tissues in the mouth, along with giving advice and administering care to help prevent future problems. They provide instruction on diet, brushing, flossing, the use of fluorides, and other aspects of dental care. They remove tooth decay, fill cavities, examine x rays, place protective plastic sealants on children's teeth, straighten teeth, and repair fractured teeth. They also perform corrective surgery on gums and supporting bones to treat gum diseases. Dentists extract teeth and make models and measurements for dentures to replace missing teeth. They also administer anesthetics and write prescriptions for antibiotics and other medications.…

Dentistry isn’t just a profession; it’s a way of life. Helping others is the best way to live, and that’s exactly what you do. “Blessed are those who hold lively conversations with the hopelessly mute, for they shall be called dentists” (Ann Landers). We all dread our next go around at the dentist. Getting our teeth cleaned, drilled, pulled, and any other horrible exploit being done to our poor teeth. What our dentist is doing (besides invading our mouths), is protecting us from any diseases that could potentially form in our mouths. A dentist is “one who is skilled, licensed and practice the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and malformations of the mouth.”…
