Literacy has the power to inspire people to change one another; it allow people to share their views and experiences. When most people hear the word literacy they jump to the conclusion that we are expressing the views on reading and writing. As a high school student, I wanted to be known for something and by attending a career school, I was able to create a goal and an identity. You might be wondering what creating a goal or identity have to do with the literacies world. Literacy was part of my everyday experience in reaching my goal of becoming a dental assist. I would volunteer in different clinics and in each of these clinics, I would have to be professional in front of patients this was an identity I had to uphold. In a amalgam procedure there are about 12-14 tools that are being used and every assist needs to know the name and also the order they sit up. As a dental assist your jobs is to hand the right tool to the doctor at the right time and also handing it a certain way. In my dental class we would always get in group for the last 30 minutes of class and do a fake procedures, so we will familiarize ourselves with the tools and learn the different functions of each tool. For example, when handing a sharp tool you must hand it so it’s behind the patient and the sharp end is facing towards you. While you are handing the tools to the doctor, you also have be pay attention to the patient's mouth to section out any extra water or any amalgam in the mouth so the patient does not swallow anything. It takes a lot of practicing and time to learn the tools and master the skills needed in each procedure but once you master it becoming second nature you don’t have to think about it, your hands remember it which is fascinating when you think about
