As a military spouse, I have chosen to discuss the depression that normally occurs within military spouses (including myself). Being the spouse of an active duty soldier is not easy work, considering we deal with everything ranging from our soldiers being in the field for days on end, working late into the wee hours of the morning, and we also deal with deployments regularly. As of right now my soldier is currently deployed to Afghanistan, so it is just our three daughters and I at home. Depression is harder to cope with when a spouse is deployed and a safe return is not guaranteed. C.) A history of depression is not uncommon in women, especially if they are spouses of an active duty soldier. II. Depression Within the General Population A.) As it was mentioned above, depression can occur within any individual. Some individuals may listen to music, surround themselves with family or friends that can cheer them up, and for some individuals who find it harder to be around others when they are depressed may choose to turn to alcohol or drugs. Men and women respond to depression differently. B.) Depression is not an easy topic to discuss for anyone, however, when it begins to occur it needs to be dealt with immediately because it can affect the wellbeing of the individual as well as others who are around them, like their children or other family members. This particular approach also places more of an emphasis on an individual’s depression being caused genetically. For this approach in means to treat depression, individuals could possibly be prescribed medication(s) that could increase the levels of serotonin within their brain. The individual’s level of depression ultimately determines what exactly is needed for them to be treated for their illness. The illness known as depression can be caused by genetics as well as environmental factors. Individuals who suffer from depression should try to remain around others who provide a positive environment in order to prevent themselves from progressing further into their depressive state. They should avoid others who are negative or create a negative environment to also ensure that they do not progress further into their depressive state and maintain a higher level of
