Women are twice as likely to suffer from depression than men. The brain of a person with depression looks and works differently. Not only negative events can cause a person to be depressed but even a positive event such as graduating, getting married, or a new job can lead to depression, but the main causes are abuse, genes, certain medications, major events, substance abuse, and death or loss. If something like a death or loss occurs, it may take time to get over it doesn't mean someone automatically have depression but it can be the leading cause in the situation. Depression is linked to other health problems, people who have a chronic condition like diabetes, heart disease, and multiple sclerosis which puts them at a higher risk of depression. Depression can lead to suicidal thoughts which can be extremely dangerous physically and mentally, once someone becomes suicidal they look for things that make them feel better or use coping mechanisms like self-harm such as cutting, burning, hitting themselves, sticking objects into their skin, and swallowing substances or inappropriate objects. Symptoms of depression include but are not limited to; Irritable or sad, withdrawn, or bored most of the time, does not take pleasure in things he or she used to, lose or gain in weight, sleep too much or too little, feeling of hopelessness. People who then go get tested by their doctor can then get treatment for these symptoms such as therapy, medications, and medical procedures. That is just some ways to treat depression, but unfortunately you can only help people who want to be helped. There are psychiatric hospitals to treat those who exceed major depression and nothing in the lower categories is making any progress to help them. Depression may precede more serious mental illnesses later in life, diagnoses, early treatment, and close monitoring are crucial.
