Materials:
Bowl
100 dimes
Laptop
Geogebra
Microsoft word
Pencil
Paper
Procedure:
Count the total number of pieces of candy, coins, or whatever object you have chosen and record this number in the chart shown below.
Total Number of Objects
Spill this object on the flat surface and count the number of objects which land face up and the number of objects which land face down. Record each number in the chart above in the row labeled Trial 1.
You may define what face up and face down is. For example, if you are working with M&M’s®, then face up could be the side with the “m” and face down could be the blank side.
Set the objects that were shown face down off to the side since they will no longer be used. Place the objects that were shown face up in the empty bowl and then spill them onto the flat surface again.
Again, count and record the number of objects showing face up and face down in the chart.
Repeat the process continuously until all of the objects have been placed off to the side. Feel free to extend the chart if you have more than 7 trials. If no objects appear face up, repeat the trial. Do notrecord a value of 0 in the second column.
Using the trial number as your x value and the number of objects shown face up as your y value, plot these points in GeoGebra. You may do this by using the “New Point” icon at the top of the screen or by typing each ordered pair in the “Input Box” at the bottom of the screen.
Be sure that you can see each point on the screen. You may need to alter the range of numbers on the x- and y-axes, by right-clicking in the Graphics window and selecting "Graphics…"
What type of exponential function will these points create?
Once the points have been plotted, draw the function which will closely connect them by using the command “FitExp”. Type FitExp[followed by each ordered pair from the chart, separated by a comma. Finish the command with
