Describe A Song Of The 90's
This song was released in the 90’s. Initially this song was created with the thought of honoring all friends and family lost during life’s journey. I believe it was also partially inspired by the AIDs epidemic that was prevalent at the time. I think when dealing with death, this is a good song to help reassure us that we might not have been able to do and say all the things we wished we had before the passing of a loved one, but someday we’ll all be in the same place and eventually, hopefully, see each other

It does not have a narrative or a straight forward statement. It is an expression of a feeling of ennui and company that helps to mitigate it, even if not with the ideal methods. This, and the other songs on the E.P. were all written while my girlfriend was undergoing intense chemotherapy. This was dark time and methods were bound to be less than ideal. We coped. We survived.…

The piece is written from the viewpoint of someone attending a funeral. The music walks the audience through the grieving emotional state of this ambiguous character and connects them to the painful sorrow, happy reminiscing, and frustrated anger that is heard throughout the piece. It accomplishes this because of its scoring and representation of emotions and actions. If this were to be his final judgement, I would whole-heartedly agree with…

At first I thought that the music was not in tandem with these lyrics at all. The lyrics have such depression in them at first while the music itself is so peppy and upbeat. I could not understand how they worked together. That for me was the site of struggle. Hegemonic norms tell us that songs about death and sadness should be slow and heavy. This song has such energy to it and resists hegemonic norms so that it couldn’t possibly fall into the category of death. I listened to the song a few more times and I realized that the song was not just a sad retelling of a story, but it is a memorial of…

There is a certain pain that is felt whenever a loved one passes. Beyond sadness, it is hurt, it is anger, it is confusion, and an almost unidentifiable emptiness where the lungs should be. People who have not experienced such loss have a happy, if hazy, view of the world. Then, there are those who lose someone… a major someone... so very special. They do eventually move on, but the pain alters them forever. Ed Sheeran, in the song “Afire Love,” illustrates how the loss of an individual can impact everyone around them, young and old.…

In music, I compare my troubles and tribulations with the lyrics. Towards the middle of the piece, it begins to build up. When I was around 9 years old, my mom passed away from failure to receive a liver transplant. This hit my family hard and to this day, we are still haunted by the day God took her away. Since this is the middle of the piece, it's starting to have emotion and deep feelings within it. Anger, hurt, and sorrow was what I was feeling when my mom passed away. I was confused and mad at the world. I didn't quite understand why people had to die since I was only 9 after all. There was always a question of why and to this day, there still is.…

The lyrics from this song tell the sad story of the wars faced by this country. “Maybe they’d be happy for a while, but, February made me shiver with every paper I’d deliver. Bad news on the doorstep; I couldn’t take one more step.” The tragic past of the many soldiers lost to wars fought with other nations shows the dark side of how our country got to where it is today. Many good people lost their lives fighting for the freedom of this country, and for the American Dream. Even though the American Dream is a great one, it comes at a high…

Like James Baldwin said “only an artist can tell and only an artist have told, since we have heard of man, what it is like for anyone that gets this planet, to survive it. What it is like to die, or to have somebody die, what it is like to fear death, what is it like to fear, what it is like to love, what it is like to be glad.” Music expresses the pain, suffering, love and all sorts of emotions that we cannot express but just normal verbal means. Artists talk about the depressing topics that we are afraid to talk about and express our inner emotions for us and give us a sense of relief that someone else can relate to us. In the revelation of the narrator at the end of the story he realized that of all the things he been through that there is still light at the end of the tunnel because he still have his brother, they are surviving and living.…

Matthew Paul Miller, also known as Matisyahu, was born in Pennsylvania in 1979. Matisyahu emerged in the early 2000’s with his inquisitive reggae Jewish pop music. His tranquil song “One Day” was released on his “Light” album by Sony Music Entertainment in 2009 (Crew 1). It is the most downloaded and listened to song on the album.
