Describe The Effects Of Emotional Abuse On Children
Emotional abuse is when a child’s basic needs are not met and they are consistently exposed to emotional cruelty. This could be calling them names by the child’s parents or carer, being accused of causing an accident or an event that has happened. They are made to feel guilty about it even if it was not their fault. They are not shown affection on day-to-day bases but only when the parent feel they have earned it by doing what they want. Parents can also be overprotective of the child and stop them from making friends with other children and talking to other people.
There are some signs the practitioner can look out for, For example, the child could be over affectionate with people they may have just met or not known long. The child may also have a lack of confidence about themselves and have a lack of social skills, which will mean they will have a few or no friends in the nursery. They can also be shaken which can be very harmful for a baby as they are fragile. The children can also be bitten, burnt and scalded this could be by using cigarettes or hot water as children have sensitive skin. Parent can give children substances from the house that is harmful to them as a punishment.
Children will full over and have accidents and the main area’s they get the injuries are their forehead, crown, spine, elbow, hip, knee’s and shins. There are also some area’s that you would not expect injuries to be on a child and some of the signs to look out for are any soft area’s on the child for example their stomach which could have a cluster of bruises on it with some having blood under the skin. The child could also have handprints, marks from objects that they had been hit with, or hurt with as well as scarring. A number of things can be used to hurt a child for example flames or hot
