Emotional abuse is when a child’s basic needs are not met and they are consistently exposed to emotional cruelty. This could be calling them names by the child’s parents or carer, being accused of causing an accident or an event that has happened. They are made to feel guilty about it even if it was not their fault. They are not shown affection on day-to-day bases but only when the parent feel they have earned it by doing what they want. Parents can also be overprotective of the child and stop them from making friends with other children and talking to other people.
There are some signs the practitioner can look out for, For example, the child could be over affectionate with people they may have just met or not known long. The child may also have a lack of confidence about themselves and have a lack of social skills, which will mean they will have a few or no friends in the nursery.
