One day the boy goes to the front for the very first time (455). Within the hour of being at the front, the boy becomes wounded and becomes left without a nose (455). Because the boy does not stay in the front very long, he receives no medals unlike the other boys. Because the boy does not have a medal or a nose, he becomes physically detached. The boy’s isolation helps achieve the mood of despair. The narrator is emotionally separated. The narrator feels isolated because he receives his medals for being American, and the other soldiers receive theirs for risking their life (455). The narrator never becomes ashamed of the medals he gets and sometimes imagines himself doing what the other soldiers did to receive their medals (455).
