Andros tore his gaze from the window to glance at the scene unfolding before him. Aella, the princess of Whiteridge, had always been a brat, or at least that's what he's been told.
At age 19, the boy had only been at the castle for a few months. His father acted as the royal advisor to King Baltsaros. Andros had become an apprentice to the king in the hopes of following in his father's footsteps one day.
This was however his first encounter with the princess. He was not finding the experience at all pleasant.
When Andros was younger, he had been kept …show more content…
away from the kingdom. His father, Soranus, had always claimed that the young boy would distract him from his duties. As a result, he had never met the infamous princess of Whiteridge.
Of course he had heard many stories from the servants but he couldn't take their stories as wholly accurate. The queen's scullery maid was the worst gossip in the whole kingdom of Whiteridge.
No, he couldn't trust them to regale him with stories of Aella. As a matter of fact, he found it difficult to trust people at all.
He took this chance to examine the princess. She had light brown hair and skin so pale it seemed translucent. Shimmery blue scales travelled from both of her hands to the tip of her forearms. Then came the defiant blue eyes coupled with the childish pout that she was currently sporting.
The princess's temper tantrums were a common occurrence in the castle. No matter the argument, the girl always got her way. As much as he detested her methods, he had to admit that she was determined.
"But father, I already told Eugenia that she could come!" Aella told her father.
"Now isn't a good time." replied King Baltsaros.
The king was right of course. He didn't need anymore distractions. The rebel forces got closer and closer to the kingdom every day.
"I can't help not knowing this when you never tell me otherwise," Aella pouted," besides, I promised and you taught me to never go back on a promise."
There was silence for a moment. Then came the telltale sigh of a king who knew he had been defeated. Heaven forbid the girl ever gets into politics.
At her father's sigh, Aella knew she had won. Although if she was being honest, she hadn't expected any different.
King Baltsaros wasn't known to compromise, let alone give in. However Aella had an advantage. She was daddy's little girl.
She could convince her father to do almost anything. This trait of hers was admired even by her older brother Jason. He had often expressed jealousy in how the king was wrapped around her little finger.
Aella ended the argument by hugging her father and shooting a victorious grin at all her spectators. The spectators had grown since her arrival in the king's study. She had expected this too. She seemed to attract attention wherever she went. She supposed it was because of her mixed heritage.
Aella felt all eyes in the room on her once more. However this time she noticed a different set of eyes among the masses. They were a light brown which was already an anomaly in the kingdom. The people of Whiteridge generally had light eye colors consisting of blue or grey.
She glanced at the dark-haired brown-eyed boy for a moment, taking in all his features. He was rather tall, much taller than her 5'8 stature.
He also appeared older than her. She couldn't comprehend this. She knew everyone in the castle as it was her nature. She was a naturally curious being . It was one of the reasons that she had been scolded so often when she was a child.
Yet she didn't recognize him. She figured that he must be new. There hadn't been a new person at the castle in ages.
He didn't seem to enjoy her little spectacle. She wondered why. Everyone else in the castle seemed to.
Even her brother who had claimed to be turning over a new leaf, had come to watch her spectacle once more. The crown prince even had the cheek to smile during the argument.
As soon as the king had conceded to Aella, her brother Jason had approached her.
"I was beginning to think you were over your little temper tantrums. Just imagine my surprise when old Aggie told me you were having some fun in father's study." He grinned at her, displaying his boyish grin.
Aella smiled at her brother's mention of Agatha. The kindly old lady knew her so well. It was to be expected though as she had been very prominent in Aella's first formidable years.
Queen Thalassa had been occupied, to say the least. Although Aella could understand why. There had been a war that occupied her parent's time when she was just a baby.
However Jason knew more about the war than she did. After all her 23-year old brother turned six the day the war ended.
Aella turned to her brother once more.
"Firstly I wouldn't call them temper tantrums but rather healthy negotiations."
Jason snorted at this.
"And secondly how is old Aggie? I must go see her."
"She's alright. Says taking care of her grandchildren is a lot easier than having to deal with you." He winked at her.
Aella scowled at him, " Don't take yourself out of the equation. You were just as bad as me."
Jason grinned as he added, " And proud of it."
Aella looked around her father's study. The large crowd had dispersed and there were only a few people still loitering around. The strange boy being one of them.
King Baltsaros spotted Jason in the crowd and beckoned for his son to join him. Jason threw Aella an exasperated look over his shoulder. Aella knew better than anyone, the great extent of Jason's responsibilities as crown prince.
She was incredibly relieved to have been born second in line to the throne.
When Aella turned around to examine the strange boy further, she discovered that he had disappeared.
"How strange!" She thought. He was the most peculiar person she had seen all week.
However she decided to think no further on the strange, brooding boy. He would be a waste of time and energy. They always were.
Eugenia always told her that she'd regret writing off the male species. However this wasn't her intention at all.
As she kept telling her best friend, she was waiting for the right person. Why would she waste her time in insignificant relationships that will amount to nothing? She would rather wait for her soulmate.
On the other hand, Eugenia thought differently.
To her boys were to be used to provide entertainment and in turn prevent boredom.
Perhaps this is why they became friends. After all, opposites attract.
Whenever Aella was visiting Whiteridge, she missed her friend dearly. She could only see Eugenia when she was visiting her mother's kingdom of () . Eugenia, a true water guardian, had spent her summers with Aella and Jason when they were children.
Aella had missed Jason greatly. For seven months now, he had been aiding her father in combating the attacks of the rebel faction. While Aella had been visiting (), her brother had been involved in a war. She had pitied him when she realized he would not be seeing () for a while.
Aella's mother, Queen Thalassa, had also elected to stay behind at Whiteridge.
Aella had felt sorrow regarding the news. She knew her mother belonged in the ocean. It was her maiden kingdom after all.
When remembering past visits to the underwater kingdom, Aella would always remember how the ocean had responded to her mother's return each time.
The waves became choppier as if in excitement and in turn the whispers of the ocean became
stronger.
For as long as she lived, Aella would never forget that feeling. The water embraced her mother as it did her and it let Aella know that the sea was truly alive.
She had felt guilty visiting () when Whiteridge was embroiled in war but she could not help herself. () was as much a part of her as Whiteridge was.
Jason and Aella were considered to be anomalies in the guardian kingdoms. Their mixed heritage attested to this.
Their father was a sky guardian and their mother was a water guardian. As a result of this, they were both one with water and sky.
Her brother had found that he was more proficient in manipulating air, particularly in making powerful winds.
Aella's powers seemed to be more varied as her particular specialty was in making storms.
The siblings had been cautioned of combining their powers as the circumstances would surely be catastrophic. Being of two elements was practically unheard of and this had the tendency to make some guardians wary of the siblings.
The siblings didn't mind though. They liked being different, even if it meant they were each other's only confidants.
As Aella grew older, she realized that her older brother could not always be there for her. His responsibilities to the throne had to come first. This was why she was glad to have Eugenia.
Eugenia had come like a whirlwind into the sibling's lives. She was a force to be reckoned with and despite their initial reluctance to include her, they became fast friends.
Aella could not wait until Eugenia arrived. The bronze-skinned beauty was set to arrive in two days time. She could not wait to introduce Eugenia to Whiteridge. And the rest of Whiteridge to Eugenia.
