Description of a city shower
A Description of a City Shower
By Jonathan Swift
Careful observers may foretell the hour
(By sure prognostics) when to dread a shower:
While rain depends, the pensive cat gives o’er
Her frolics, and pursues her tail no more.
Returning home at night, you’ll find the sink
Strike your offended sense with double stink.
If you be wise, then go not far to dine;
You’ll spend in coach hire more than save in wine.
A coming shower your shooting corns presage,
Old achès throb, your hollow tooth will rage.
Sauntering in coffeehouse is Dulman seen;
He damns the climate and complains of spleen. Meanwhile the South, rising with dabbled wings,
A sable cloud athwart the welkin flings,
That swilled more liquor than it could contain,
And, like a drunkard, gives it up again.
Brisk Susan whips her linen from the rope,
While the first drizzling shower is born aslope:
Such is that sprinkling which some careless quean
Flirts on you from her mop, but not so clean:
You fly, invoke the gods; then turning, stop
To rail; she singing, still whirls on her mop.
Not yet the dust had shunned the unequal strife,
But, aided by the wind, fought still for life,
And wafted with its foe by violent gust,
’Twas doubtful which was rain and which was dust.
Ah! where must needy poet seek for aid,
When dust and rain at once his coat invade?
Sole coat, where dust cemented by the rain
Erects the nap, and leaves a mingled stain. Now in contiguous drops the flood comes down,
Threatening with deluge this devoted town.
To shops in crowds the daggled females fly,
Pretend to cheapen goods, but nothing buy.
The Templar spruce, while every spout’s abroach,
Stays till ’tis fair, yet seems to call a coach.
The tucked-up sempstress walks with hasty strides,
While seams run down her oiled umbrella’s sides.
Here various kinds, by various fortunes led,
Commence acquaintance underneath a shed.
Triumphant Tories and desponding

The Waterhouse project was an inquiry that looked at children’s abuse within children’s homes in 1996 that was opened by the welsh secretary. It all started when Sir Ronald Waterhouse who was a retired high court judge opened a tribunal of enquiry into child abuse in North Wales in 1974. It was a huge abuse scandal and took evidence from 575 witnesses, including 259 complainants alleging abuse when they were in care. Over 9500 social services files were made available and over 3500 police statements were scrutinized. There were well over 40 000 pages of evidence of complaints for just 40 homes and foster placements.…

Aqualisa Quartz, a significantly innovative product developed by Aqualisa, in terms of both cost and quality, has been facing challenges in the market since its launch four months ago. The product described by one of the customers (a plumber) is a 'push-fit-connect-you're done' shower and offers the customers 'what they (the plumbers) want'. Despite the above facts, Quartz has experienced poor sales and has not met the company's expectations.…

Central Los Angeles was not a place I would image to be frightening and disgusting. There were tall brick buildings and abandoned railroads ruined by colorful graffiti. Gutters and cracks on the street were bursting with the pungent smell of decaying trash as if I was in the middle of a junk yard. It was scattered with food, bags and empty grocery carts thrashing along the sidewalks where the homeless kept their belongings. The streets were overwhelming with the stench of gasoline, weed and smoke from tons of cars and people walking by. The area is known for their mouthwatering food, but the crowds were hassle, rude and infuriating. As I walked toward the food carts, its delightful fragrance lingered in the air masking the odor of the streets…

“Filthy Cities” stresses the nightmare that was life for New York’s European immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th century. “New York City was a magnet for European immigrants” (Robins) and this migration from countries such as Ireland was one of the biggest mass migrations in history. The Irish were one of the first groups of immigrants to arrive due to their 1840s potato famine. 1/3 of the immigrants died on the ships on the way to NYC but for those that did arrive safely, more struggles and challenges awaited. As described in the video some of the issues included population (overcrowding), power consumption, wealth, and diseases, all of which would continue to rise throughout the 20th century. One unambiguous issue was population, which had direct a influence on the unfair quality of life of non-wealthy citizens as well as contributing to necessary progressions that drove NYC to become the successful city it is today.…

Concerns that I have for our watershed is that people would be people pollute the storm drains that then could cause an algae bloom. I found evidence to support this claim from coastal-watershed.org/threats-to-watershed-health/ where it states “Urban Runoff or ‘storm drain pollution’ is one of the leading causes of water pollution in this country. Urban areas contain up to 90 percent hard surfaces such as rooftops and pavement where water collects and quickly runs off. Urban Runoff is difficult to prevent because it is nonpoint pollution. That is, instead of originating from a single-point source, such as a factory or sewage treatment plant, the sources of urban runoff are spread throughout an urban area. Such sources include yards, sidewalks,…

    Aqualisa: a Better Shower

    • 2365 Words

The plumbing system in the United Kingdom is very inconsistent due to the varying age of the buildings making shower temperature and pressure challenging to control. Aqualisa designed the Quartz system to address these issues by integrating an electronic controller into the plumbing of the shower unit. After development and field testing, most believed this would take over the market and propel Aqualisa into a powerful position in the shower industry. Unfortunately, sales struggled and many believed the Quartz system would become a niche product selling only to the technological elite. The quick answer would be to more aggressively market the product with hopes that increased exposure to the market would generate greater sales. Thus, the chief problem Aqualisa is experiencing is how to market its new technology and efficiently increase market share in the U. K. shower industry. If the wrong target market is chosen, the money spent in advertising may not be recouped by sales revenues.…

As a response to deteriorating relations between the clergy and the military at Old Sarum, the decision was taken to resite the cathedral and the bishopric was moved to its present place in Salisbury.[3] The move occurred during the tenure of Bishop Richard Poore, who was a wealthy man and donated the new land for construction. The new cathedral was also paid for by donations, principally by all the canons and vicars of South East England, who were asked to contribute a fixed annual sum until its completion.[4] Legend has it that the Bishop of Old Sarum shot an arrow in the direction he…

Aqualisa Quartz is an amazing product, it present innovation to shower market and deals with the temperature and pressure issue presented in other type of showers. Aqualisa Quartz is easy to install, no need of an expert, and also fast, half a day approximately, compared to other installations that can be 2-3 days. Besides they are very reliable, they do not break and do not need high maintenance. However, the product, after the launch, have’t sell as it was expected. The objective for this company is to sell more. As we see, in Exhibit 4, plumbers seem to be our target costumer, they are present in the 73% of shower selection. Even though Aqualisa is perceived as a high quality brand and with good costumer service and is number 3 in brand positioning in showers from all the United Kingdom, they have to differentiate from the competition to conserve its presence in market. Plumbers influence in the costumers choice, this is reflected in the 28% of the costumers end up installing the shower the plumber recommend and in a 25% of the cases, the plumber install a shower without even consulting the costumer, additional to that a 54% of the showers in UK are installed by a plumber. In the shower market, Aqualisa is perceived as a high price product, companies do not innovate and if they to is every 3-4 years, in addition to that people do not rely on new innovations given the fact that not good experiences have come with electrical innovation. The strategy, Aqualisa should implement is to direct the effort to high-standard segment with an innovated product that have a different and elegant designed product. This product should address mainly the plumbers that are interested in increasing their productivity and families with elders or children, whom functionality, innovation and design are important factors to consider. Is important to remember that once the plumbers try the product, have to be fascinated with it. For that reason,…
