Assignment: Descriptive Essay

This is an oil painting on canvas. Basically it’s a very old picture, but the color is still very bright. The painter would like to describe a picture that fruits stacked on a market stand, there were many different kinds, with a lot of colors. The picture looked so beautiful that people always stopped and appreciated it.
Fruits were not displayed disorderly. All the fruits were placed into three columns. Some of them with bigger sizes were put in both sides, while the smaller ones such as plums, green grapes, grapes, were placed in sequence from top to bottom in the middle of the picture. The fruits with a similar color were not also put together. Pink peaches were placed on the upper right corner, while red tomatoes were put under them, and yellow pears were displayed in the bottom right corner. Red apples, oranges and green apples were also placed in order on the left sides. It was a trenchancy comparison, and the customers can easily find what they want, save their time and feel more confident. The business of this counter must be very prosperous because the colors of the fruit looked so bright that it made us feel they must be very delicious, so did the customers. When I was looking at the picture, I even couldn’t help picking the fruits off to eat.
The fruits were not just on the table, but you couldn’t see the table in the painting because the sellers spread a piece of cloth below each bigger fruit, in order to keep them fresh and clean, and the table had been hide. But instead, each smaller one would be put into a box, because these small fruits would be easily scattered all over the floor without containers. What’s more, there were some plants with dark green leaves placed behind the fruits. The whole scene gave us a comfortable feeling. It would help the customers felt more relax and enjoyed their shopping.z

The color palette of the painting is diverse, while red and warm earth tones dominate the painting. The light source seems to be in front of the left section of the picture while dispersing towards the right. The use of light gives the illusions of volume. The gradation of the sky is very exaggerated. The top is a dark blue and as it reaches the middle the sky is very light. The painting has a smooth finish and is very detailed. The flowers on the bottom are very intricate as well as the patterns of the people’s garments. Each face has a distinguished and unique appearance; no two faces are…

This is a Zen painting in the 13th century artwork by Mu-Ch’i Fa-Ch’ang. It was painted towards the end of the Song Dynasty. It is part of a handscroll with paintings of fruit and vegetables. The persimmons are done in ink alone. They are arranged in three groups-two, one, and three. They vary in size, their stems points towards different directions, and there is difference in tone or shade they are painted in. No two persimmons share the exact relationship yet there exist a pattern. In the row of five, the largest and the darkest in shade is in the middle, and the two lightest in shade are on the outsides.Yet, all the persimmons have no visible…

The objects, which are placed with great order and precision, show a great contrast between light and shadow, which throws the painting into darker tones. The objects are drawn to look so natural that one can assume that the artist most likely painted from life. I was curious if the objects he chose to paint were significant. Much care has gone into the placement and placing of the bowls of fruit and cup, which leads me to believe that most likely an equal amount of care went into deciding what to…

The focus of the painting-the tree- is located in the center of the painting while the man is at the bottom left corner of the painting. Such positioning allows viewers to first recognize the tree which is the main focus of the painting upon looking at the painting. Although the tree catches the viewer’s attention first, the painter has made an effort to make the man stand out so that the viewers do not miss to see him. The painter does this by making the man wear bright colored clothes. The man’s clothes are blue and red as opposed to brown and gray. Dull dark colors like brown and gray would not have made the man as obvious as he is now. In addition to the colors used in the man’s clothes, the painter has also used color as a means of portraying the time. The light brownish, orange and yellowish background suggests that it is that time of the day when the sun is just about to…

Kiwi Series # 1 is a painting of a kiwi fruit, which is cut into half. It is placed on a table or some hard surface. The painter has drawn every little detail of the fruit in the painting. The seeds, the internal minor lines in the fruit, and the difference in textures are done with great enthusiasm and passion. This painting makes me calm and relaxed because of the colors used in this painting and also its overall appearance.…

Suzanne Roles studied painting and printmaking at Camberwell School of Art from 1979 to 1983.Her still lives are based upon photographs taken with macro lenses and also use natural light to create dramatic shadows, therefore exploring the main interests of space, colour and texture. She is influenced by 16th/ 17th century Spanish still life artists. “My still lives are based upon aerial photographs taken using natural light to create dramatic shadows,” she says, "therefore exploring my main interests of space, colour and texture. Oil paint is particularly suitable for recreating the rich and voluptuous nature of fruit.” “I work in layers building up the image with varying thickness of paint, allowing each layer to dry before continuing, and finally finishing with glazing.” Analysis of the image- The image is 2 full raspberries and 5 parts of raspberries drawn with oil pastels, the raspberries are a shade of warm light to dark crimson and with whites and blacks as the background. The image has very vivid and lively colours which makes the raspberries look juicy and full. The light is coming from the left-middle, this is shown by the reflection of the light on the raspberries mostly on the left top. The image was most probably drawn from sight with the raspberries being in front of her because the raspberries are drawn with exceptional detail and with accurate size and shape. The image looks very realistic and 3D because of the colour and light, the overall shape of the raspberries are a uneven oval-cirlce's. The composition of the raspberries are crowed together to maybe give the effect of there being a lot of them. The texture of the raspberries are shiny and smooth which means that it was drawn by long full strokes to make each “bead” of the raspberries look fat and round. The media that Suzanne used was oil pastels, the techniques she probably used was with long strokes and using white or other colours on top to avoid the oil pastel coming…

Luscious green trees saturate the background with different shades of vivid greens. A blooming orange tree stands amongst flourishing green rainforest bushes. These bushes stretch across the entire painting with long green stems rising up from the bottom giving the illusion that the dimension of the rainforest is immense. An earthy brown Gibbon monkey hangs from a branch of the orange tree as its long slender legs dangle and slant towards its right. A second Gibbon monkey stretches his long slender arms above its head holding on to the first monkey’s legs. Amongst the bushes four monkey arms reach out toward the sky giving the impression that there are two more monkeys waiting at the bottom yet only their arms are exposed. In the hand of one arm is a bright orange which creates a correlative pattern with the oranges further above that appear to be “thrown” down from the monkeys dangling on the tree. Toward the bottom far left a larger monkey in gray scraggly coat similar to a Mandrill holds an orange above its face exposing only the black masking covering its eyes giving off the appearance of mischief. The correlation in exchange of oranges amongst the monkeys gave the overall effect that the monkeys were working together. This…

‘The Harvest at La Crau’ is the first painting that I am going to talk about. It is by Vincent Van Gogh. Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch Post- Impressionist painter. Post – Impressionism is a style that artists would use including using vivid colours, thick use of paint and unique brush strokes. He was born in 1853 and died in 1890. His work was beautiful and emotional with its bold colours and rough textures which no one was impressed by at the time he was alive. However, many people today still love Van Gogh’s work of art and would pay millions for his work. He didn’t fit into any painting school because of his unique colour sense. In his life he produced 860 oil paintings. When Van Gogh was a child he loved to draw and until the day he died, his love for art got stronger and stronger. Unfortunately he had a problem; he had depression because no one appreciated his work and he gave up his life and committed suicide in 1890.…
