A swallowing darkness, that kept one imprisoned in unconsciousness.
Then, out of the darkness, came a sound; a ringing of sorts. Slowly, dimly, light began to return, and the darkness was replaced with a blurry sense of vision.
The man awakened on the cold ground, strewn in a horrible position across the autumn leaves and grass. His back was to the ground, his limbs spread out, and all he could feel was the pain. It ached all over his body, and an odd sensation came from the head and neck, though he could not describe it. He attempted to scream, groan, or make some noise to relieve his suffering, but none came out. Or rather an unfamiliar, strangled sound emerged, one that was guttural, almost inhuman.
Confused by this, he weakly moved his hand, which was still there, to feel at his face. With horror he realized that the odd sensation was a missing jaw, and when he pulled his hand away all he saw was red, the red stain of blood. The events of the day came back in full force to his memory, and with that was snapped back into the terrible reality he was living.
The ringing had been replaced with the thunderous din of gunfire and explosions. The air was suddenly filled with the groans and cries of wounded soldiers. All around the man were soldiers, both friend and foe, lying on the ground just as he was. The clearing …show more content…
His chest sunk down, and for a moment the man resigned his fate into the hands of what seemed like a boulder on his back. However, an instinct reared him back up, discarding the burden off of him into the cold, hard ground which he moved upon.
