Whilst opposition was less successful than after the Emancipation Proclamation during the 19th and early 20th century White Citizen’s Councils by ‘unleashing a wave of economic reprisals against anyone, Black or white, seen as a threat to the status quo’ hindered progress. Prior to the years of 1953 improvements had been made to the lives of African-American’s. During 1953 to 1960 opportunities for African-American’s improved significantly in many areas such as social, economic, political and justice. In saying that however, during this period the areas that improved opportunities for African-Americans also stayed the same as many of the improvements were quite limited. Limitations in what had improved was due to attitudes of the White-Americans, mainly those who lived in the South and especially the Deep South as de-facto segregation was present in education, employment, facilities including housing. Jim Crow laws throughout the South also ensured that blacks were second-class citizens, lacking in political, social, economic and justice equality. When Eisenhower was inaugurated on January 20, 1953, he took control of a country that faced many challenges in the upcoming years. Having to manage a growing economy, develop the nation’s infrastructure, and tackle Cold War pressure, Eisenhower’s administration handled many daunting tasks during its eight years (Miller Center). Among these challenges, many consider the most serious challenge to be “the question of civil rights and equality of African Americans” (Smith 706). In all very few improvements were made for Black Americans, however the first step with the publishing of the 1947 “To Secure These Rights” report showed that the federal government was starting to listen, this was backed up further by the desegregation of the Armed forces in the following year of 1948. The U.S. economy entered the decade of the 1960s with high levels of unemployment and excess capacity. The millions of unemployed workers and idle plants and machines meant that industrial production could increase rapidly in response to rising demand. The economy crisis (1957-61) and African American experience during WW2 allowed civil rights activists to pursue social reforms such as the desegregation of schools and achieving voting rights. In the mid-1960s this transition was helped along by government economic policies. These were, first, the Kennedy-Johnson tax cut of 1964. As Kennedy pushed to promote economic policies this encouraged African Americans’ to continue pushing for their social rights. Brown v. Board of Education, Topeka 1954, the US Supreme Court reversed the “separate but equal” doctrine in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). This “separate but equal” doctrine became the legal base for racial segregation in schools, colleges, and universities. Brown v Board of Education is a historical landmark case that dismantled segregation laws and established a great milestone in the movement toward true equality. The Supreme Courts unanimously decided on Brown v. Board of Education that "separate but equal is inherently unequal." Ruling that no state had the power to pass a law that deprived anyone from his or her 14th amendment rights. For my historical analysis I will use Richard Kluger’s “Simple Justice”, in which he argues, “that the Declaration of Independence was marred by hypocrisy—all men were not equal if black”. His book will assist me in learning the policies that lead to and surrounded this case. Using interviews I conducted, where I questioned inner city high school students of their schooling experience in comparison to my brother who attends a predominately white privileged private school, I will ultimately uncover the many inequalities that still exist today. While researching I interviewed my great-Aunt Bertha, who grew up in the state of Mississippi, she had a first-hand experience of life before Brown v Board of Education and life after the Supreme Court ruled on the case, her life was changed forever. My research will focus on not only a historical analysis of what occurred, but how far America has claimed to truly come in dealings with race relations, and the inequalities that still exist today.…

The NAACP wanted it to happen fast and the states warned of the violence if this process was completed too quickly. Even if the original writers of the Fourteenth Amendment did not want to prohibit segregation in education, they did want equal rights in public services. ‘Going back into history it is inevitable to notice the progress towards integration of educational system has been very slow. Ten years after Brown v. Board of Education ruling, 7 of the 11 Southern states had not placed even 1 percent of their black students into integrated schools. As late as 15 years after the decision, only one of the every six black students in the South attended a desegregated school’ (Bullock). On one other hand in history we come across Day Law being established in the state of Kentucky which made it unlawful for any institution to educate blacks and whites together. In the 1950s the United States was very segregated even though there was no longer slavery the separation between the two races was still very great. In the south there were laws that did not allow for white and blacks to use the same accommodations, such as water fountains and restrooms in public places. Even though the North did not have these same laws it still suffered from de-facto segregation. For example, several new suburbs created in the 1950s were predominately white due to blacks not being able to afford to live there, resulting in the de-facto segregation. Therefore, White Americans continued to earn the superior jobs because they were attending exceptional schools and getting a higher level of education. The most powerful thing in the world is knowledge and even though African-Americans were allowed to attend school now the majority went to schools that weren’t funded well. As a result, African-Americans continued to receive an inferior education. For this reason, the movement began to use the “separate but equal” principle on their side. “Segregation did lifelong damage to black children, undermining their self-esteem,” argued Thurgood Marshall. For this reason, it was believed that African-American children felt as if they were unfit to associate with others.
