At the moment, our planet Earth is being degraded and losing its name by the phenomenon called desertification; it is represented as one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time. Desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semiarid and dry sub-humid areas. It is a gradual process of the loss of soil productivity and the thinning out of the vegetative cover due to human activities and climatic variations, such as frequent droughts and floods. The main climate-related causes of desertification are lower rainfall and higher temperatures. Among human causal factors, there are examples such as over-cultivation, overgrazing, deforestation and poor irrigation practices. Desertification occurs in dry and fragile ecosystems, and it has been affecting the terrestrial areas, animal/plant populations, and as well as human settlements and amenities.
