Designer Baby Debate
Designer baby (“Design-a-baby”)
–a term used by journalists, not scientists
Definition: A baby whose genetic make-up has been selected in order to eradicate a particular defect or to ensure that a particular gene is present.
How production of designer babies is carried out (rough gist): Parents and doctors can now screen embryos for genetic disorders and select healthy embryos. Designer baby technology or reproductive genetics combines genetic screening and engineering1 processes with in vitro fertilization2 (IVF). This process is known as Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).
Steps:
1. Creating an Embryo with In-vitro fertilization (IVF).
2. Removing a single cell from that embryo within the first 5 days of creation
3. Genetically testing the cell
4.

Select the sex of a future child. (Illegal in UK)

Note: The debate over designer baby technology in some ways mirrors the philosophical and moral debate over abortion or embryonic stem cell research.

Should the “production” of designer babies be ethically permitted?
YES
NO

Abuse of the use of PGD. Parents may use this technology for superficial purposes such as purposely seeking out a blonde haired, blue eyed baby for appearance concerns only. (DISCLAIMER: This isn’t possible YET, it’s just a concern that it could be possible in the near future)

Prevents genetic diseases such as Down syndrome, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and many others.

However, this would mean that children with inborn genetic problems are inferior to those without, which is sending the wrong message to the general public.
Parents have a right to prenatal autonomy, which grants them the right to decide the fate of their children.
It is treating a sacred human life as a thing

In the article “Ethics of Designer Babies” by Sarah Ly states what a designer baby entails. Ly explains that a designer baby is a baby genetically engineered in vitro for specially selected traits, which can vary from lowered disease-risk to gender selection. As a result, designer babies have become an important topic in bioethical debates, and in 2004 the term “designer baby” even became an official…

My thoughts on designer babies is that it is a wonderful thing to research, but now it's crossing the line. It's amazing how we can take DNA and change it to what we like it to become, but this is someone’s life you are changing. Not only this, but this is now a rather large debate going on about this. Whether or not this practice is palatable or not. It's important to research and make amazing discoveries, but putting someone's life on the line shouldn't be something to put under the…

People strive for progression in order to move forward with the changing times. As scientific technology progresses, people begin to move towards the bright idea of perfection. This could be seen in the concept of designer babies. A designer baby is a baby that has its genes specifically chosen in order to ensure that a certain gene is or is not present. This concept brings about many questions regarding the safety and the ethics of choosing specific traits for a child. The articles “The art of medicine: Designer babies: Choosing our children's genes,” by Bonnie Steinbock and “Children to…

Genetic modification is becoming closer and closer to an everyday possibility. With this possibility comes a whirlwind of possible effects, both positive and negative. There has been a history of opposition towards these technologies, oftentimes because of fear that the capabilities would be abused. However, the potential that newborns could be born free of hereditary diseases outweighs the fear of “designer babies”.…

Modifying genes could be a way of preventing unwanted traits or enhance characteristics (Against Designer Babies, Sheldon Krimsky). Unfortunately, CRISPR is a first generation tool, so there is no possibility no damage will be done to the baby. As well as no security, the baby will not have any life-threatening defects, as it is known that “curing” one disease causes another. In fact, this will create a bad relationship between parents and children (The Ethnic of ‘Designer Babies’, Tia Ghose), since the children have no choice in being modified. Using babies to alter their characteristics is using them as science experiments since there are over one hundred genes that account for each trait and fifty genes account for three percent of one gene (Against Designer Babies, Sheldon Krimsky). With many parents willing to allow these experimentations to occur on their baby, it will come at a huge…

How to make a Designer Baby? That is not a simple question to ask, it hardly includes complex steps and a process. And each one or each step should be perfect and if not certain problems may occur. First is to create an Embryo with the use of a "in- vitro fertilization" or what we call IVF. The first step is not an easy step, it includes a long and a complicated process.…

This operation crosses the aforementioned line by changing the genetics of a fetus to achieve a stereotypical idea of what a human should look like or should be. Some say that the experts are “playing God” and looking at a religious perspective, having a child should be a present from the higher power (Thadani). Thus if the parents of the future children try to change the child to fit a certain mold, it would technically be changing God’s, or any form of a higher power’s, intention of human life. The unethical procedure will lead society to question if the experts are “playing God” by alternating genetics to fit the the stereotypical idea of what a human should look…

Designer babies can cost thousands of dollars, thousands of dollars which is not available to everyone. Allowing only the rich to participate in something like this could lead to a huge imbalance in our society. If the only the rich can make their children smarter or more athletic, these enhances will give them a huge chance to be more successful, ultimately creating a never ending chain, making only the rich richer and poor poorer. According to Brandon Keim “The idea that it could be accessible to everyone is specious. We can’t even get universal childhood vaccinations. We hope now that we’re going to get expanded coverage and health care, but to think we’ll supply fertility treatments to everyone, not just people with…
