Should Designer Babies Be Allowed
Should designer babies be allowed?

Introduction

In my case study I will be discussing should designer babies be allowed? I will be looking at what designer babies are, how would they be achieved? as well as the pros and cons of designer babies. I will also review the possible effects that having designer babies has.

Explanation of designer babies
A designer baby is the word used to describe the act of genetically modifying the genes of babies. They can also screen embryos for any disorders and could even been uses for modification of characteristics such as gender eye colour and even intelligence. Advanced technologies have allowed doctors to be able to screen embryos for any genetic disorders to enable them to select healthy embryos. It is now also possible to use these advanced technologies to select the gender of a child. Through In vitro fertilization people believe that we will be able to use the genetic technologies to modify these embryos to choose the wanted characteristics of a child. The term designer babies come from how journalists describe this possible situation but this is not a term used by scientist although in 2004 the term was put into the Oxford English dictionary. http://www.bionetonline.org/English/content/db_cont3.htm This is a reliable source because the information is written by specialist and I also looked up the word designer baby in the dictionary and used the information I found.

How are designer babies made?

The act of modifying the genes of an embryo for reasons such as to prevent disease or gender selection can be achieved as shown in the diagram below. http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/03/11/1047144972401.html This diagram shows the process of genetic screening which is based on the testing embryo for any defects that may be in the genes such as genetic diseases. The process starts with the women being given fertility drugs so that she will product more than just one egg in her next menstrual cycle. These eggs are then

Scientists are developing ways to edit the DNA of tomorrow’s children. In the short story “Flowers for Algernon”, by Daniel Keyes, there is an intellectually disabled man named Charlie Gordon that is also going to operated on to promote his intelligence. As informed scientists are developing ways to edit the DNA of babies. That means that people are making their babies with requested traits: intelligence, eye color, athleticism, and disease prevention. They are known as designer babies. The author also makes it clear there are many people for designer babies; they see the positives to the “mad science”. Many families will use this after having one child with a disease and they want to be sure their next child doesn’t suffer from the same thing. People who carry genes that may cause life threatening childhood illness should be able to have healthy children if science can assist them, said an anonymous scientist. Tuhus-…

James Gallagher, a health editor for BBC News which is ranked as one of the most objective and credible U.S news sources, constructed an article called “Designer babies' debate should start, scientists say” (January 15, 2015). Within this source, Gallagher claims that leading scientists have told BBC that based on the current progress in the understanding of genetics, society needs to be prepared to come to terms with the ethics that surround the concept. In order to provide foundation for his argument, Gallagher brings up questionably unethical scenarios relating to designer babies, and adds what some scientists that work closely with genetics have to say about the topic. For instance, Gallagher added the opinion of Dr. Tony Perry, a professor…

My thoughts on designer babies is that it is a wonderful thing to research, but now it's crossing the line. It's amazing how we can take DNA and change it to what we like it to become, but this is someone’s life you are changing. Not only this, but this is now a rather large debate going on about this. Whether or not this practice is palatable or not. It's important to research and make amazing discoveries, but putting someone's life on the line shouldn't be something to put under the…

The term "designer baby" is an informal name given to a baby whose genetic makeup has been altered by means of genetic engineering. This term was originally derived from 'designer clothing ', implying that the baby has been pieced together with desired 'traits ' or characteristics according to the direction of those that hold with them the power to change a baby before it is born. This may be the parents, scientists or doctors. Currently, it is a technology in its early stages, used to screen embryos and select those with desirable traits for implantation into a mother. However, as it slowly advances and possibilities begin to reveal themselves, parties for and against have rallied about the moral rights…

People strive for progression in order to move forward with the changing times. As scientific technology progresses, people begin to move towards the bright idea of perfection. This could be seen in the concept of designer babies. A designer baby is a baby that has its genes specifically chosen in order to ensure that a certain gene is or is not present. This concept brings about many questions regarding the safety and the ethics of choosing specific traits for a child. The articles “The art of medicine: Designer babies: Choosing our children's genes,” by Bonnie Steinbock and “Children to…

Should designer babies be allowed to happen or should babies just be born naturally. I think that designer babies should be allowed in some ways to like fix a birth defect not to make the baby but to help it live. So that is kinda why i think that designer babies should be allowed to be used but in some cases it would be better for the parents if they had the kid and for it to not be made. Because some parents want their own kid and not a made kid by scientists. I agree that designer babies should be used so that we can save kids lives. That is all I can say about the introduction.…

Genetic modification is becoming closer and closer to an everyday possibility. With this possibility comes a whirlwind of possible effects, both positive and negative. There has been a history of opposition towards these technologies, oftentimes because of fear that the capabilities would be abused. However, the potential that newborns could be born free of hereditary diseases outweighs the fear of “designer babies”.…

Human genetic engineering is the process by which the human genome is being modified and manipulated in order to remove or select certain genes. Moreover, traits that are desirable can be selected, and preventing the genetic causes of diseases is possible. Human genetic engineering, as a new field, has raised a lot of questions and ethical issues. I argue about where we should put the limits for our genetic editing. Should we just use it to prevent harmful diseases or can we carry on with the modification and choosing the desirable traits of our future generations? Who decides? Who has the right to object? I will try my best to provide reasonable answers to those questions throughout my series of blogs, based on scientific articles that talk about its controversial and ethical aspects.…

Modifying genes could be a way of preventing unwanted traits or enhance characteristics (Against Designer Babies, Sheldon Krimsky). Unfortunately, CRISPR is a first generation tool, so there is no possibility no damage will be done to the baby. As well as no security, the baby will not have any life-threatening defects, as it is known that “curing” one disease causes another. In fact, this will create a bad relationship between parents and children (The Ethnic of ‘Designer Babies’, Tia Ghose), since the children have no choice in being modified. Using babies to alter their characteristics is using them as science experiments since there are over one hundred genes that account for each trait and fifty genes account for three percent of one gene (Against Designer Babies, Sheldon Krimsky). With many parents willing to allow these experimentations to occur on their baby, it will come at a huge…

To start off, considering a family does choose to genetically modify and separate a child from the true family line of genes can have really bad risks. The procedure in which designer babies are made outside the mother's stomach like stated before the main questions for this is "Is the baby getting enough food and nutrients?" Although, that is not the only risk. Just putting the genes inside is a risk...The embryo inside can pop causing the baby to die. On the other hand this can be justified, all birth can lead to a miscarriage natural or not. Having a designer baby or natural baby, both children will get the same kind of care to make it out safely.…
