As a woman, who has ‘meat’ on her body and is on the curvier side, I say we should appreciate, accept, and embrace our bodies for what they are and treat them right. Take the famous Marilyn Monroe as an example. Marilyn wasn’t a size 0 or a size 3. She was in fact a size 12 and was still beautiful. One of Marilyn Monroe’s insecurities was to be constantly and continually sexy for the media. This eventually led to her downfall. Curvaceous, determined, and strong willed, women who are much bigger now look up to Marilyn Monroe as a role model.…

Last week I read a story about yoga clothes-maker/fashion brand Lululemon and their fairly blatant disregard for any sort of overweight or plus-size consumers. In short, they admitted that selling to women who wear size 12 and smaller is an important business strategy for them, and that it’s based on “design, capacity and operational perspective.”…

For a long time women and men have had self image issues due to what society depicts is beautiful. If you don’t look like a certain kind of model or a certain actor/ actress then you are considered ugly. This has been going on for the longest time. Women are judged by the size of their waist, butt, thighs and how pretty their face looks. Men are judged as well. They are judged on how muscular or tall they are or if they are capable of being a Hollister model. People shouldn’t be judged on how they look.…

Are they too big, too small, what is the perfect size? On television, in magazines, and in games, all you see are slender fair skinned women. They were not curvey, because that meant you overweight, their bottoms were not very plump because that also made you look fat. The women being shared on social media had thin lips, and very pale skin. That is until stars like the Kardashians started using plastic surgery, to get fuller lips, curvy waist and plump bottoms, and also using tanning beds to get darker. Soon they were known for the full lips and thick bodies, and bronze skin when before black women who were built that way were always considered overweight or not beautiful. How can someone who is built and looks almost be the same be better looking than another race? Soon many people began to copy what their stars were doing to get the nice thick body that they believed the Kardashians created. Have you ever heard of the Kylie Jenner lip challenge? For a while a many people were sticking their lips in water, and soda bottles, to make their lips swell to get full, plump lips like Kylie. She is known for the full lip trend that has been going on for about a couple of years, something that black women and other minorities have naturally. She…

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you pleased, or do you immediately come up with an endless list of insecurities? As a child one of my favorite memories was laying around the house with my older sister on rainy days. We would leave the windows open so we could hear the rain coming down on the tin roof over our patio, while watching reruns of our favorite tv show “America's Next Top Model”. I always thought that these women were gorgeous and I would catch myself constantly comparing their looks to my own. I wanted to be just like them until I realized the unrealistic expectations that they had to live up to. A sizeable butt and breasts, but not too large; they have got to be proportional. A skinny waist, impeccable hair, blemish free face although even with clear skin you are expected to cake on makeup because no one is actually pretty without mile long eyelashes, the perfect smoky eye, and exemplary contouring. Society has idolized these things as “beautiful” and shamed the girls that do not meet these standards; however, society should be making everyone feel confident in their bodies. Girls need to know that it is okay not to have an “hourglass figure” so they don’t…

In “Size 6: The Western Woman’s Harem”, Fatema Mernissi, a middle aged Moroccan woman, ventures into an American department store, only to find a stuck up saleswoman who seems to be degrading her because of her size. The woman tells Mernissi that the high end department stores only carry up to a size 6, and that that is the norm in America. Mernissi explains to us that in her hometown of Morocco, the men drool over her “generous hips”; while in America, men seem to like women who look like “adolescent girls”. Mernissi elaborates on this idea and goes into detail about how the people in this country allow others to create this standard and have the power to make a person keep a close eye on his or her own physical appearance simply for the satisfaction of others.…

The western culture seem to view a larger woman as something to be frowned upon, even medically; if you have a cough these days, it’s because you’re over weight, if you are depressed, it’s because you’re overweight, you pass out, it’s because you are fat; fat is emphatically not beautiful.…

In the documentary, Dying to be Thin, dancers and regular people are asked about the pressure to be thin. This video has taught me that in our society being extremely skinny is considered beautiful. Not everyone is meant to be a size 2. It all depends on what your body type is. Everyone is beautiful no matter what size they wear. The word beautiful does not require the word skinny.…

Before the Agricultural Revolution, larger bodies were seen as more beautiful and normative because food sources were always limited. This then shifted as food became more available to everyone and the standard of beauty shifted to smaller, more petite bodies. These notions that smaller bodies are more superior or more deserving of respect is extremely sizeist though. Body size in relation to race has always been a huge problem, mostly lying between white and nonwhite women. The standard of beauty is seen as small, petite, and fair skin, which is highly noticeable when looking at today’s fashion marketing. One does not typically see black, curvy bodies in high fashion. Not only is there an ideal for small women, but so too for curvy…

Put simply, the beauty ideal in American culture is: thin. “Large populations of ‘average’ girls do not demonstrate clinically diagnosable eating disorders—pathologies that the culture marks as extreme and unhealthy—but rather an entirely normative obsession with body shape and size,” Cutler said. “This ongoing concern is accepted as a completely normal and even inevitable part of being a modern girl. I think we need to change that.”…
