In the novel ‘Destroying Avalon’ many people have influenced her but not always in a good way. As Avalon is constantly bullied online and offline there are not many people who have helped her significantly. Throughout the novel Avalon begins to exclude herself from others, including her family and some friends. Avalon only has a small group of friends that tolerate her and do not believe all the lies everyone else is saying. Most of the people who influenced Avalon were bullies, and only her family and close friends were the only ones who influenced her in a good way.
One of the people to influence Avalon positively during ‘Destroying Avalon’ was Marshall Tate, Marshall was Avalon best friend. When Avalon was being harassed Marshall was the only person who knew how Avalon felt and reacted to the rumours being said about her. Even though Marshall was said to be gay throughout the novel in the end he said in his journal, “Well Marshall – you may have your answer!! Today a new girl joined our group. She’s funny and smart – I really like her!! I think I must have been going through a phase!” Marshall. Marshall was always able to cheer Avalon up in the darkest of times even when Avalon thought it could not get any worse. When Avalon was on the verge of breaking Marshall was able to comfort her in the way no one else could.
Alice Davenport was a person who was extremely intimidating towards Avalon as she was forward about how she disliked Avalon. Alice’s reputation makes Avalon feel pressured to be liked, if not she will be marked as a reject. Alice was able to make Avalon feel worthless and miserable by being modest about the hate she feels towards Avalon.
