Determining If An Egg Will Float In Salt Water
Objective/Question/Problem The objective of this project is to see if an egg will float in salt water. The question is how much salt is needed to be added to the water to make the egg float. The problem is that no one knows how much salt is needed to make an egg float.
Hypothesis
It will take at least three teaspoons of salt to be added to the water for the egg to float. The reason why I think three teaspoons of salt will need to be added to water for the egg to float is because the egg a density that is lower than the density of the salt water.
Background information Density and buoyancy are the main scientific reasons for the egg floating in the salt water. Density is the measure of how tightly packed matter is (Buller, 96). For this

My name is Madison Johnson. I am in the 9th grade. I am in Mrs. Logan’s biology class. I am doing my project on “The Magic Floating Egg”. Eggs sink in normal tap water and I am testing whether or not changing the density of water will make the egg float. I was looking at projects on sciencebuddies.org and I saw that multiple people had done this. I am trying to prove that when you add a certain amount of salt to water, it will make it more dense. I took pictures of the results. This information can be useful because we can test the density of salt water versus the density of normal tap water..…

My results to my findings to my brine shrimp experiment was started on 12-28-15, using 4 jars. Each jar contained water, salt, and brine shrimp eggs. I started by filling each jar with tap water and then adding salt. I added 1 TSP of salt and each jar added ½ TSP more of salt. In my experiment I noticed on the first day, 12-28-15, in all the jars the brine shrimp eggs were added to the 4 jars. Some observations I noticed were the eggs didn’t sink right away, they stayed on the surface for awhile. On the second day, 12-29-15, in jar 1 85% of the brine shrimp eggs hatched. In jar 2 75% of the brine shrimp eggs hatched. In jar 3 65% of the brine shrimp eggs hatched, and in jar 4 70% of the brine shrimp eggs hatched. All 4 of the jars had the same observations, they didn’t swim gracefully, they were on the side of the jar with more light, and there was still unhatched…

    6. The reason some objects float and some objects don’t float is because when an object is dropped in the water pushes back on the object with a force equal to the weight of the displaced water. The weight of the displaced water is called buoyant force. Also, if the object is less dense than the liquid it will float but if the object is denser than the liquid it will sink.…

The purpose of this lab is to find out which osmotic environment the eggs are in while sitting in different liquids. There are three different types of environments: hypotonic, isotonic, and hypertonic. Hypotonic solution causes the cell to swell until it bursts. Hypertonic solution causes the cell to shrink or to lose weight. Isotonic solution doesn’t cause the egg to shrink or swell, it keeps the cell the same it’s just in a different environment.…

The ability to maintain a stationary on the surface of the water- varies from he on person to another. Our body floats on water when forces created by its weight are matched equally or better by the buoyant force of water. For an object to float it needs to displace an amount of water that weighs more than itself. Body density, or its mass per unit volume, also impacts on the ability to float. Density is an expression of how tightly a body’s matter is enclosed within itself.…
